History and description

The Aviva Stadium is the national stadium of Ireland and the playing venue for the Irish national team. It also hosts most of the nation's major rugby matches. Aviva Stadium was built on the site of the old Lansdowne Road Stadium which was one of the oldest stadiums in the world when it got demolished in 2007. Construction of Aviva Stadium started right after and finished in early 2010 with a price tag of $410 million. The stadium was designed by Populous.

The record attendance for an Aviva Stadium game was 58,000 when Chelsea played Barcelona in the Champions League on 6 November 2017.

The stadium in 2011 was the playing venue of the Europa League final between FC Porto and SC Braga.

The Aviva Stadium was not selected as one of the playing venues for the Euro 2020 Championships because it could not provide assurances that spectators would be admitted due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The stadium's most notable feature are its stands that curl around the entire stadium, a shape chosen to make sure that the surrounding houses get enough sunlight. The stadium holds a total of 10,000 premium seats as well as 1,300 seats in corporate boxes.

How to get to Aviva Stadium

The Aviva Stadium is located in central Dublin, about 2 kilometers from the city center. The walk from St Stephen's Green park or Trinity College will take 20 to 30 minutes. Fare for the journey is €4. From Connolly Station or Pearse Station, take a DART train southbound. Get off at station Lansdowne Road, which is right next to the stadium. The fare for the journey is €4.

From the Temple Bar area take bus 7 to Loughlinstown/Cherrywood.

Wojciech wrote on March 30, 2015 at 7:12 pm that the stadium is great and looks amazing both outside and inside. He went to watch the Euro 2016 qualifier between Ireland and Poland and the atmosphere was terrific. The walk from the city center took him about 40 minutes, but there were quality food kiosks around the stadium. There was no alcohol sold on that day. He would go there again any day.

The great stadium looks amazing both outside and inside. I went to watch the Euro 2016 qualifier between Ireland and Poland, and the atmosphere was cracking. We walked from the city centre and it took us about forty minutes. The quality food is sold in kiosks around the stadium, but there was no alcohol sold on that day. I would go there again any day.

William Hunt wrote on February 15, 2015 at 10:06 am: It's absurd not to finish the stadium properly. It's the National Stadium, for heaven's sake! The residents to the north could probably be relocated and compensated in a way that would make way for it.

Three quarters of a wonderful stadium! It really does seem absurd to not finish it properly, though. It's the National Stadium for heaven's sake! The residents to the north could surely be relocated and suitably compensated to make way for this.

Cian Deasy wrote: I went to an autumn rugby international a year or two ago, Ireland v Argentina. The attendance was only about 40,000, but the atmosphere was great nonetheless. I wish that pint-sized end stand was made a little bigger; it takes away from the atmosphere. The facility is great; very clean and modern.
