As a kid, I loved going to Blockbuster. Whenever my grandfather proposed going there to rent a movie or game on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, I would light up. Everything about going to Blockbuster was fun. It's really a shame that kids born after 2010 will never experience the joys of going there, picking out a couple movies, and then bringing those movies home to watch with friends and family.
I know that I am probably dating myself here, getting nostalgic for a time when life was more rooted in the physical world than the digital (back in my day!), and, of course, there are myriad benefits to movie streaming sites; admittedly, simply logging onto a site like Netflix and being able to instantly choose from hundreds of movies is an experience in its own right, certainly a more efficient way to go about it. However, there really is something to it, I think, to leaving the house in order to browse actual shelves lined with actual VHS or DVDs.
When I turn on, say, Netflix or Hulu, there is a good chance, nine times out of ten, that I have an idea of what I am going to watch. And then once my movie streaming site of choice loads up, it is guaranteed that I will be able to watch the movie I had in mind. Even though at the time it didn't necessarily feel this way, in hindsight one of the perks of going to rent a movie from a place like Blockbuster was the possibility that they wouldn't have any copies left. In that case, well you had to get creative, pick out a backup. This is precisely how I stumbled upon some of my favorite movies - because they were all out of the one that I came for but I wasn't going to leave empty-handed!
And was there any better feeling than realizing that you got to Blockbuster just in time to snag the very last copy of the movie that you came for? I call this feeling of scarcity and urgency only adding to the fun.
I could go on and on about my memories of Blockbuster for hours (nostalgia is a powerful drug), but don't worry, I will spare you that. Instead, today we will look at how Blockbuster has managed to stay in the movie rental game after the streaming revolution all but put them out of business.
Despite its far from dominant position in the movie rental business, Blockbuster has survived into the age of streaming thanks to its Scandinavian movie streaming rental sites, such as Blockbuster.de. The company's lack of international brand recognition may have contributed to its lackluster performance in the movie streaming rental space; nevertheless, it is nice to see that Blockbuster hasn't been entirely wiped from existence in 2021.
Many people may not agree, but in terms of movie streaming rentals, Blockbuster still has that special something that made them one of America's most beloved companies of the 20th century.
Is it time to bury Blockbuster? After all, their site seems antiquated and not up to par with some of the most cutting-edge movie streaming sites on the web today. But what's the verdict? Only one way to find out for sure is to take a closer look at what Blockbuster.de has to offer. So who's ready for a trip down memory lane?
Design
Blockbuster.de is a site that instantly recalls the experience of going to the store to rent a movie. The site has retained its iconic blue and yellow color scheme, and the interface invites you in with intuitive features right away. For instance, there's an extra-large banner that showcases featured films and their rental prices, or you can scroll through at your leisure. The choice is yours.
Scroll down a bit to browse Blockbuster much in the same manner as you would browse any of the best movie streaming sites on the web. Peruse a series of menus that are organized by category and genre. Browse by Blockbuster Hits, Popular Brands, Popular Movie Series, etc. Unlike many movie streaming sites, however, Blockbuster has opted for an unconventional gallery layout. This may not be for everyone, but it more closely mirrors the experience of browsing movies at Blockbuster, so I will let it slide.
In terms of browsing features, the site is extremely responsive and dynamic, meaning that it updates itself constantly in order to ensure that all content is as up-to-date as possible.
Blockbuster.de employs very responsive and dynamic menus and other unique browsing features which make up for this. Scroll back up to the top of the homepage and find the site menu bar. You will see here that the site is split into 4 basic sections: Movies, Series, Children?s Films, and Upcoming Movies. Hovering your cursor over the Movies section will trigger a smooth and convenient dropdown menu that allows you to either click on one specific genre or browse all movies if you so choose; this same genre filter will appear at the top of the page when you click into All Movies, allowing for a quick and simple means of browsing Blockbuster's extensive catalog of streaming movie rentals. In terms of browsing features, Blockbuster is extremely responsive and dynamic meaning that it updates itself constantly in order to ensure that all content is as up-to-date as possible.
Content and Features
Blockbuster offers some great features that other movie streaming sites would envy. For example, each movie comes complete with credit info, extras, trailers, and IMDb ratings. Plus, you can "like" titles as you browse in order to have easy access, should you want to rent or buy them later.
One of the things that really stands out to me about Blockbuster is the fact that it keeps an index of actors. This way, users can easily see what movies are available with their favorite actors, simply by clicking into their profile. I don't see why every movie streaming site doesn't employ something like this, personally - this is a great example of the kinds of features that I expect to find on one of the best movie streaming sites in the world.
As far as content is concerned, Blockbuster continues to be versatile. You will find classics, new hit movies, iconic series, and even Netflix and Hulu originals there. However, you should not expect to rent or buy movies that have just come out there; instead, wait a little while for them to come out and they are likely to appear on Blockbuster.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
Blockbuster seems to have adapted well to the 21st century model of movie rentals. Their site is dynamic, responsive, and top of the line, and they also have cross-platform availability, putting some of the so-called best movie streaming sites on the web to shame. Rent and buy movie streams on a variety of devices, including Android and iOS, PlayStation 4, Apple TV, Android TV, and select Smart TV brands.
The apps, too, are good as the desktop site. It may come as a surprise to some, but Blockbuster is one of the more modernly accessible, competitive movie streaming sites out there in 2021.
Pricings and Plans
The cost of renting and buying digital movies on Blockbuster.de seems to be reasonably priced, with rentals costing around 49kr and purchases ranging from 49kr to 169kr for new releases.
