History and description

The Bombonera stadium was built between 1938 and 1940, and is said to have received its name because the architect suddenly realised the similarities between the stadium and a chocolate (bombon) he was eating. Boca Juniors had played at the site since 1924. The land that was then used as a stadium was bought by Boca Juniors in 1931, after which they started making plans to build a new concrete stadium that could hold 100,000 fans.

The La Bombonera officially opened on the 25th of May 1940 with a friendly between Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo (2-0). It took until the end of 1941 for the second tier to be completed. A third tier was finally constructed between 1951 and 1953.

The La Bombonera stadium at that time had stands on three sides. The fourth side was left open with just a few VIP boxes and an obelisk, as there wasn't enough room because of the nearby residential buildings.

Boca Juniors almost moved to a new 140,000-stadium in the 1970s but political and economical turmoil ended the construction that had just begun.

In 1986, the stadium was named Estadio Alberto J. Armando in honour of the former iconic club president. However, most fans have continued to refer to the stadium as La Bombonera.

In 1996, a new stand was erected on the open site that was higher than the previous one and primarily consisted of VIP boxes.

Boca Juniors is currently in the process of constructing a new stadium that will have a capacity of 75,000 seats. The stadium will be situated adjacent to La Bombonera, but the latter will not be demolished. The plans are still in preliminary stages, and no official announcement has been made yet.

How to get to La Bombonera

La Bombonera is located south of Buenos Aires city centre (Microcentro), near the Plaza de Mayo and San Telmo nightlife area. It is not advisable to drive because of the many potholes in the road. La Bombonera is not easily accessible by car and is advised to either take a taxi or use public transport. It is not advisable to drive because of the many potholes in the road.

The stadium does not have a metro station in the vicinity, though the walk from the San Telmo area should take no more than half an hour.

All of these buses terminate at the south side of the stadium. There are many buses that pass close to the stadium, most of which also cross the city center (microcentro). Take one of the following buses in southern direction: 10, 20, 22, 24, 25, 29, 33, 39, 46, 53, 54, 64, 70, 74, 86, 93, 102, 129, 130*, 152*, 159*, 168*, or 186. It is also close to trendy districts like San Telmo and La Boca. There are many restaurants and bars in the area surrounding Plaza Dorrego, but the San Telmo district to the north may provide a better alternative. Most of these places are located within walking distance of the stadium.

He never showed up, and the other 10 people waiting there had to walk from the metro station to the stadium. It's not an easy walk, but you can get a very cheap taxi. A continuous stream of saliva came from above throughout the game but also was thrown down were a car tyre and, no kidding, a shopping cart! It was quite an experience. Boca lost 1-0.

I attended the last game of Batistuta's career for Boca Juniors vs. San Lorenzo in 1991. At the time, admission to the game was free, and I was standing behind the goal. San Lorenzo fans were on a tier above; a continuous torrent of spit from above endured throughout the contest, but also thrown down were a car tire and, no kidding, a shopping cart! It was an extremely unique experience. Boca lost 1-0.

It's nothingspecial when you walk in, but the steak was amazing! And for only about £5 with a beer, after the tour we walked down to La Camitino tourist area. It's only a five minute walk, and we didn't have any problems but be a little careful because apparently they have a lot of crime in this area between the stadium and the start of the Main tourist street. Buenos Aires is brilliant!

I would recommend the steak restaurant directly opposite the stadium. It's nothing special when you walk in, but the steak was amazing! And for only about £5 with a beer! We didn't have any problems, but be careful because apparently they have a lot of crime in this area between the stadium and the start of Main tourist street.

Buneos Aires is brilliant !

La Bombonera: Today. Directions, Tickets, Address, Map, Pitch (2022).

The La Bombonera stadium was built between 1938 and 1940, and is said to have received its name because the architect suddenly realised the similarities between the stadium and a chocolate (bombon) he was eating.
