History and description

The stadium is located in Montevideo, Uruguay. The stadium had originally been planned to host all of the World Cup matches, but due to heavy rains construction was delayed and some of the matches were moved to Estadio Gran Parque Central and Estadio Pocitos.

The Estadio Centenario was named for the 100th anniversary of the Uruguayan Constitution. At its debut, it could only hold around 100,000 spectators.

Although some alterations were made shortly after its inauguration, the space has since been reduced due to its conversion from standing areas to seats.

The Copa América finals that have been held at Estadio Centenario over the years are as follows: in 1916, 1920, 1935, and 1995.

The stadium Estadio Centenario is not owned by any club, so any club can rent it. Peñarol used to use the stadium for practically every home match, but moved away to their own new ground, Estadio Campeon del Siglo, in 2016. Other clubs tend to use the stadium for high-profile matches like in the Copa Libertadores and their home matches against Peñarol and Nacional to increase gate receipts.

The stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 100,000 people. The Estadio Centenario is furthermore the standard playing venue for the Uruguay national team. The stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 100,000 people.

How to get to Estadio Centenario

The stadium is located in the centre of Montevideo, about 4.5 kilometers east of the old city centre. It is very close to the Tres Cruces central bus terminal, from where it is a short 10 to 15-minute walk. From the historic center, you can reach the stadium with bus 115 and 143. Catch bus 143 from Mercedes street (two blocks north of 18 de Julio) and it runs almost in a straight line to the stadium. Get off at the Av. Dr. Americo Ricaldoni (corner of Av. Italia).

Bus 115 takes a more roundabout way to get to the stadium. You can board the bus at Andes Street at the crossing with Av. 18 de Julio (near Plaza Independencia) and get off at the Av. Dr. Americo Ricaldoni (corner Av. Italia).

The buses 21, 64, D9, and D10 from Av. 18 de Julio can also be used to get to the stadium. They are all quick and pass the stadium very close. However, they are not exactly in front of it, which makes it harder to orientate yourself where to get off (which is at the Av. Italia corner Av. Dr. Americo Ricaldoni).

The Estadio Centenario stadium is part of a larger sports complex that includes other facilities and parks. The stadium is located in the center of Montevideo, which means there are a decent number of bars and restaurants near the stadium - especially on the city center side near the bus terminal - but for serious nightlife you will need to head to the old city center or southern Pocitos and Parque Rodo areas.
