History and description

The City Ground was Nottingham's first municipal football stadium and is where the Forest played their first ever competitive match on 19 October 1898. Nottingham Forest moved to the City Ground in 1898 after previously trying to find a permanent home. The City Ground was Nottingham's first municipal football stadium, and it is where the Forest played their first ever competitive match on 19 October 1898. The City Ground officially opened on September 3, 1898. At its opening, it consisted of mainly wooden stands.

Some improvements were made in the 1960s, mainly in expanding the terraces, but the ground only really started to develop from the1950s. The first was a new East Stand (later Executive Stand), which opened in 1957.

On the opening day of the new East Stand at the City Ground, records were broken for both attendance and revenue. A total of 49,946 people packed into the stand to watch Forest play Manchester United, breaking previous marks by nearly 5,000 people. The new stand has already paid off dividends for the club, with increased revenue and a packed house on record day.

In 1962, a fire severely damaged the wooden main stand. However, it was successfully restored six years later. In 1967, a second fire destroyed the same stand, and it was subsequently rebuilt. At that time, the stadium could hold about 43,000 people. Of these, 17,500 were seated in the main stand.

The construction of the Brian Clough Stand in 1980 allowed further developments to take place, which resulted in the name of the stand being changed to the Brian Clough Stand in honour of Forest's most successful manager.

New all-seater stands were built at the Bridgford End and Trent End in 1994.

The City Ground was one of the venues used to host the European Championships in 1996. It played host to three first-round group matches during that event.

Recently, the club has been investigating the possibility of building a new stadium. However, the failed bid for England 2018 World Cup and ongoing resident opposition at proposed sites have thus far halted any progress.

How to get to the City Ground

The City Ground is located in the south of Nottingham on the banks of the river Trent. It is situated at a 1.5 mile walk from Nottingham's rail station and only slightly further from Nottingham's Market Square. The walk will generally take less than half an hour. The stadium is situated across the road from the historic Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, and lies only a few hundred metres away from Meadow Lane, the home of Notts County that is located on the other side of the river. These two stadiums make them the two closest stadiums in England.

Many buses pass the City Ground. Every few minutes, a bus will leave the center that will bring you to the ground, including line 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 22, and 90. The journey takes less than 10 minutes.

Skylink provides a public bus service that connects the stadium with East Midlands Airport. The trip takes about 35 minutes.

Love the place?

Jemma Hovell, 13, wrote: March 5, 2015 at 8:12 am This is the best place on earth for me and I love forest; even though I'm terrified of heights, the staff were really understanding and empathetic. My little brother was with me on my first ever match and on the train the way home he said that was better than skegness and that was huge.

I am thirteen years old and I thoroughly enjoy the forest here at the park. Even though I am terrified of heights, the staff were incredibly understanding and sympathetic. My little brother accompanied me on my first ever match and he agreed that it was much better than playing Skegball. That feedback was very important to me.

I think the Brian Clough stand is iconic and the away end seems well designed. I like how it lowers to fit in with the other side of ground. However, I was disappointed on a boiling hot day someone turned the water off in the ground.

Despite its iconic status and well designed away end, I was disappointed with the ground itself on a boiling hot day. Somebody turned the water off in the ground, spoiling the experience for all.
