History and description

The stadium is a well-known and popular tourist destination for visitors to Edmonton. Commonwealth Stadium, built by the city of Edmonton to serve as the flagship venue of the 1978 Commonwealth Games, is a well-known and popular tourist destination for visitors to Edmonton. Construction on the new Clark Stadium began in 1975, and it took three years to build the stadium. The stadium opened on July 15, 2018, just before the Olympics.

It currently seats over 60,000 people. The stadium was expanded for the 1983 Summer Universiade, and can currently hold over 60,000 spectators.

Commonwealth Stadium received refurbishments in 2001 and between 2009 and 2012. The stadium was one of the playing venues of the 2015 Women's World Cup.

The local club Edmonton FC does not typically play matches at the Commonwealth Stadium, though they have played a few matches there in the past. They typically play their matches at Clarke Stadium, which is much smaller than the Commonwealth Stadium.

The stadium is the permanent home of the Edmonton Eskimo's Canadian football team.

How to get to Commonwealth Stadium

The Commonwealth Stadium is located rather centrally in Edmonton, at about 2 kilometres north-east from downtown Edmonton. It is a 30-minute walk to the stadium from downtown, or you can take an LRT light rail train. Station Stadium is located right next to the stadium. You can take a Capital line train from, for example, Corona, Central, or Churchill station in downtown or destinations further north or south. It is a short ride from downtown of approximately 5 minutes.
