History and description

Max-Morlock-Stadion, also known as Frankenstadion and Stadion Nürnberg, was built between 1926 and 1928. At its inception, it could hold about 50,000 spectators. Over the years, it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions to accommodate a wider range of spectators. Currently, the stadium hosts approximately 75,000 fans per match. . The stadium was designed by local architect Otto Ernst Schweizer, who emphasized its octagonal shape. This remains a distinguishing feature of the stadium and makes it the only such structure in Germany.

The stadium and its surroundings played an important role in the Nazi Party and Hitler Youth during the 1930s. After World War II, the stadium became a sports field used by the United States Army.

Few football was played at the stadium in its first decades. 1. FC Nürnberg kept playing at their Spielstätte am Zabo ground, and only in 1963 made the move to the larger Städtisches Stadion. At the stadium's inception, football was sparsely played there; however, in 1963 1. FC Nürnberg moved to a new stadium and began hosting more games there.

In 1971, the stadium's capacity was increased to about 75,000 people. However, the city of Nürnberg passed on the opportunity to further modernise the stadium and become a host city of the 1974 World Cup.

The Städtisches Stadion underwent a large redevelopment between 1987 and 1991, which included the construction of a roof. This reduced capacity to just over 50,000 and the stadium was subsequently renamed Frankenstadion.

The Frankenstadion was renovated in 2004 and 2005 in preparation for the 2006 World Cup. During the World Cup, it hosted four group matches and the round of 16 match between Portugal and Holland (1-0).

After the World Cup, the stadium was renamed to easyCredit-Stadion as a result of a sponsorship deal. This deal expired in 2012, and a new deal resulted in Grundig Stadion, which ended in 2016. In 2016, the stadium was renamed Stadion Nürnberg.

In 2017, the stadium was renamed Max-Morlock-Stadion after the former Nurnberg player, who had secured the naming rights of the stadium through a crowdfunding campaign with the Consorsbank.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Max-Morlock-Stadion

The Max-Morlock-Stadion is part of an attractive area of parks, lakes, recreation facilities, and the city's conference center. The area is especially historic because it was historically an important Nazi rally ground. The adjacent Zeppelinfeld is one of the remaining memorials from the era. Additionally, there are pop-up stalls around the stadium for a quick bite.

There are a few hotels around the conference centre (Messe), which are within walking distance of Max-Morlock-Stadion. ARVENA Hotel and a Mercure are both located nearby, while the Ramada Parkhotel is also close by.
