History and description

Elland Road was officially opened as a football stadium in 1937. Elland Road opened in 1897 and, for the first few years, it was only used for rugby matches. In 1904, newly formed football club Leeds City moved into the ground, and over the following years the stadium gradually expanded. Elland Road was officially opened as a football stadium in 1937. By 1985, the stadium was in need of extensive repairs and as a result, Leeds United agreed to sell the stadium to the city for £500,000. After Leeds City was expelled from the Football League in 1919, the stadium was sold for £250 to newly formed Leeds United. Further renovations were made shortly after, but few changes were made in the decades following. By 1985, the stadium required extensive repairs and as a result, Leeds United agreed to sell the stadium to the city for £500,000.

In 1993 a new stand was built and the old stand was demolished. A fire in 1956 destroyed the West Stand, necessitating the construction of a new stand. With Leeds United's success in the 1960s and early 1970s, further renovations were made to the stadium. In 1993, following continued success by Leeds United, a new stand was built and the old standby was demolished.

In 1967, Elland Road achieved a record attendance of 57,892 spectators during an FA Cup match with Sunderland.

The club started a redevelopment program for the ground in the early 1990s. The most notable part of this program was the rebuilding of the East Stand in 1993. At completion, this stand had a cantilever design and was considered to be one of the biggest in the world.

Elland Road hosted three group matches during the Euro 1996 Championships at which it was one of the playing venues.

In the early 2000s, Leeds investigated a move to a brand new 55,000-stadium. However these plans were shelved after the club's finances severely deteriorated. Only minor renovations have been made to the stadium since.

How to get to Elland Road

Elland Road is located in the south-west of Leeds, in the Beeston suburb. It is about 2 miles from Leeds Rail station and Leeds city centre. The stadium lies adjacent to the intersections of the M1, M62, and M621 motorways. You will take junction 1 from the M621, which will bring you to the entrance of the stadium. The stadium is signposted from the motorway.

The bus stop for bus 51 is in the front of Kirkgate Market, and the bus stop for bus 53 is on Meadow Lane just south-east of the train station. Bus 55 has a separate stop at Elland Road. The trip on each bus takes about 20 minutes.

Address: Elland Road, Leeds, LS11 0ES

Alan Hawkins wrote on March 17, 2014 at 4:28 am: I have lived in Leeds most of my life and am a massive fan of the club. However, I now live in Aberdeen so I can't get to every game, but I try to make as many as possible. I took my wife on one of the tours last time we were visiting, and even she enjoyed it. The tour guide was fantastic, and the staff we saw seemed to enjoy their jobs. I plan on returning to watch a game in March and then again in June to take my kids around the famous stadium. Let's see if Leeds United can win another championship!

I have lived in Leeds most of my life and am a massive fan. I now live in Aberdeen, so I can't always get to every game, but I try to make as many as possible. Last time we went on a tour of Leeds United's stadium, my wife enjoyed it. And she's not a big football fan. The tour guide was fantastic, and the staff we saw seemed to enjoy working at Leeds United. I will come back again in March for a game, and then in June to take my children around the famous stadium. Come on, you Leeds United fans!
