Ernst Happel Stadion: Today. Directions, Tickets, Address, Map, Pitch (2022)

It was inaugurated on 10 August 1931 with a friendly match between Austria and Yugoslavia. The stadium was renamed Ernst Happel Stadion in 1952 in honour of the Austrian football manager who had led Austria to the semi-finals of the 1954 World Cup.

History and description

The stadium is located in the north-west of the city, in a former military training ground. The stadium was originally used for association football and track and field matches. It also hosted regular concerts. The Ernst Happel Stadion, initially called Prater Stadion, was built between 1929 and 1931. A new large sports stadium had been a longstanding wish of the city of Vienna. The stadium is located in the north-west of the city, in a former military training ground. The stadium was originally used for association football and track and field matches. It also hosted regular concerts. The stands were elevated on a platform above the stadium's playing surface, and there was a running track circling the outside of the tiers.

After World War II, football became more popular and the Prater Stadium soon needed to expand. In 1956, therefore, a third tier was added which increased the stadium's capacity to 91,150.

In 1960, an attendance record of 90,726 was set during an international between the Austrian and USSR national teams.

By 1984, several standing areas had already been converted into seats, thereby reducing the capacity of the stadium to just over 70,000. In 1984, a grand redevelopment was announced, including the construction of a roof and the conversion of the stadium into an all-seater. Capacity was further reduced to under 60,000.

In 1993, the name of the stadium was changed to Ernst Happel Stadium in honour of the legendary Austrian player and manager.

The Ernst Happel Stadion was refurbished for the Euro 2008 tournament, including the placement of temporary bleachers in front of the permanent stands. During the tournament, it hosted three group matches, a quarter-final, a semi-final, and the final between Spain and Germany (1-0).

The stadium has hosted four Champions League and European Cup finals over the years. The first was between Internazionale and Real Madrid, which resulted in a 3-1 victory for Madrid. In 1987, Porto scored a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the second final at the stadium. AC Milan scored a 1-0 victory over Benfica in 1990, and Ajax won the 1995 final against AC Milan by a single goal.

The 1970 Cup Winners' Cup final was played at the Ernst Happel Stadion between Manchester City and Gornik Zabrze. Manchester City emerged victorious by a score of 2-1.

Between 2014 and 2016, the stadium was the home of Rapid Wien while they were building their new Allianz Stadion. In 2016, it was the turn of Austria Wien to move into the stadium when they started works on rebuilding their Generali-Arena. The new Allianz Stadion will be finished in 2018, and then Vienna will have two stadiums to choose from.

The Austrian FA has expressed the desire to build a new national stadium over the years. However, at present there does not seem to be much interest from the city in building an expensive new stadium that would only get used a few times per year.

How to get to Ernst Happel Stadion

The Ernst Happel Stadion is located about 3.5 kilometers east of Vienna's inner city on the edge of the Prater Park, close to the Danube River. The ferris wheel, also in the Prater Park, lies about 2.5 kilometers north-west of the stadium. It takes approximately 25 minutes to reach the stadium from the city centre.

Address: Meiereistraße 7, 1020 Wien

Eat, drink, and sleep near Ernst Happel Stadion

The Ernst Happel Stadion is located between the Prater Park and the Danube River, which are mixed together with some other sports facilities, the city's conference center, some retail stores, and some residential buildings. There is a shopping mall located right across the road from the stadium. It has a few food options, but it is generally easier to get food and drink in the inner city.

All hotels within 200 metres of the stadium have been selected for this guide. Nearby hotels near Ernst Happel Stadion offer reasonable rates. The Hilton Vienna Danube and Courtyard by Marriott Wien Messe are close by, but can be more expensive. The Austria Trend Hotel Messe is a bit cheaper, but all hotels within 200 metres of the stadium have been included in this guide.

Instead of choosing a hotel near the stadium, you could choose one between the stadium and the inner city. The Suite Hotel 200m zum Prater is on the other side of the park toward the center. Hotel Urania, Hotel Adlon, and Hotel Cristall lie close to the fair and are reasonably priced. There are also various apartment rental options in the area.

Here are all of the hotels near Ernst Happel Stadion. If you wish to stay in Vienna's inner city, then some options are available.

Tickets for Austrian national team matches are sold through the OEFB Austrian football association.

Visit our online travel guide for Vienna to learn about the city's public transportation options. Our site provides information on how to use the city's buses, trains, and tubes, as well as tips on where to find the best fares. With Austria finishing their own stadium next year, the only chance to catch a game at the national stadium will be an international game. Vienna is a nice city so I would recommend everybody catching a game there after a day of sightseeing there. Plenty of food outlets inside with hot dogs, burgers and fries.

Vienna really hits the spot after a long day of travelling.
