Estádio do Arruda: Today. Directions, Tickets, Address, Map, Pitch (2022)

The stadium was commissioned by the municipality of Recife in 1950 and its construction began on October 10th of that year, its inaugural match being played against Penapolense. Although originally designed to seat just over 25,000 spectators, the final product would ultimately seat over 40,000 people. Plans for the construction of Estadio do Arruda were made as early as 1955 when the major of Recife, Jose de Rego Maciel, gifted the club a piece of land that it had leased 12 years earlier. History and description

A proposal to construct a stadium on the club's existing land off of Avenida Petrópolis was made in 1955 by Recife's then major, Jose de Rego Maciel. The idea was endorsed by the club's president, Carlos Alberto Pacheco and vice-president, José Maurício Rangel. Construction on the stadium began in 1957 and it was officially inaugurated on July 3rd of that year with a game between Bahia and Botafogo. Santa Cruz started making plans to build a new stadium in 1964 but it wasn't until they had concrete plans that could hold 64,000 spectators that they did so.

It was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, but Brazil did not win any medals. The Estadio do Arruda officially opened in 1972 with a match between Santa Cruz and Flamengo. It was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, but Brazil did not win any medals.

Plans were made for a major expansion of the stadium in 1982. Works were completed and the stadium could theoretically hold over 100,000 spectators though these never entered as real capacity was lower due to safety restrictions.

In 1993, a qualifier between Brazil and Bolivia was played at Estadio do Arruda. The stadium reportedly hosted more than 96,000 spectators, though official attendance was set at just 75,000.

Over the years, the capacity for the stadium gradually decreased due to further safety restrictions, now standing at just over 60,000. Generally, however, the capacity is limited to about 55,000.

Since 1982, the stadium underwent only minor refurbishments. For the 2014 World Cup, the local government opted to build the new Arena Pernambuco in nearby Sao Lourenco da Mata.

How to get to Estadio do Arruda

The Estadio do Arruda is located in the north of Recife in the Arruda area. It is about 5 kilometres from Recife's old town and 10 kilometres from the popular Boa Viagem beach resort area. There is also a shuttle bus that runs between the terminals and the city centre.

The Estadio do Arruda is not located on the metro, so either take a taxi or inquire locally about bus routes.

Address: Av. Beberibe 1285, Arruda, Recife , 52120-130
