FilmOn App has had a recent rough period. Not only is the service losing its touch with time, but it also does not seem interested in reviving itself. Even today, you will find 600 channels on the network that was available back in 2017. You will find content from popular platforms such as ITV, CBS, and even BBC. Having said that, what should be your expectations when it comes to this app? I would say do not keep them too high.

What is FilmOn Live TV Chromecast?

But even with the app, there are some live events that are not available, or they require a subscription. FilmOn is a free service that allows users to watch television shows and movies on their laptop or mobile phone. The service was created by developers who claim that most of the content on FilmOn is free to access. However, if users want to enjoy the complete FilmOn experience, they will need to spend money. For example, the website has a decent design but does not include all of the features available in the app (such as missing live events). Additionally, there are some live events that are not available through the website or app, and users must subscribe in order to view them.

What should you expect from the FilmOn Live TV Chromecast App?

I have already mentioned the numbers above, and I will not deny that FilmOn does have a lot of content. However, it is more of a quantitative approach with the developer having filled the websites with unknown channels which you will not bother to watch. Yes, there is content from popular channels as well, but that is like a fraction of the overall package. Most of the channels and streams you find on this platform will not even meet your viewing needs.

Genre & Content Addition

While the library in terms of number is impressive, there are a few drawbacks to its content capabilities. For instance, you can watch content from a wide range of genres on this platform, such as Action, Horror, Romance, Fantasy, Movies, Music, and Entertainment. However, to access the extended library with recent releases, you need to subscribe to the premium network. Additionally, while the library has a large variety of books and magazines available for checkout at any time,. it's not always easy to find what you're looking for when you need it. So yes,, that's quite a catch when you can compare its pricing with the leading streaming services. Stick around because we'll be checking out pricing and plans later in this review.

Streaming Quality

While the streaming quality in and of itself isn't bad, there are quite a few restrictions. For instance, earlier you could stream 720p from a free account. However, now you need to subscribe to the service if you want to stream in SD or HD quality. The deeper you dig, the tighter the shackles get. On the flip side, I can stream a wide range of TV channels from around the world, along with the video-on-demand content. But do I want to do it at 480p? Absolutely not.

Acceptable User Interface

FilmOn may not have the best design in the streaming niche, but it does have a clean UI. Although the app still feels better, it is far from great. I still appreciate the developers emphasizing on enriching the mobile experience, but based upon its pricing, if FilmOn is to compete with the likes of Netflix or Prime Video, it has an Everest to climb in terms of UI/UX.

Content Diversification

The platform's content diversity and easy-to-use guide/schedule are two of the few strengths it possesses. Other than geolocation, users can choose content from a wide range of genres, and stream live without any delays thanks to the developers' added features.

FilmOn Live TV Chromecast App Information

However, if you have an older Android device, you?ll be out of luck. In my opinion, the biggest issue with the FilmOn app is that it has not been updated in a long time. The app was last updated in July of 2017, and according to current standards, this is not a timely update. Premium networks like Netflix update their apps every month, so it's hard to forgive FilmOn for not updating their app more often. Additionally, the size of the app can vary depending on which devices it is installed on. However, if you have an Android version above 4.4.1, you are good to go. However, if you have an older Android device, you will not be able to use the FilmOn app."

How to access FilmOn Live TV Chromecast?

To access FilmOn Live TV, search for the term "FilmOn App" on Google Play Store. Install the app on your device and open it. FilmOn can be accessed on a wide range of devices including PC, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and even over the top (OTT) devices such as Roku.

Design

One thing I can say for certain is that the app design is better than the website. However, given that the developers think of it as a premium service, it is quite ludicrous. The homepage of the app has a lot of room for improvement. The layout and text size appears too big. It looks as if the developers designed it in 2013 and forgot to update it ever since. If you compare the app with leading streaming apps, it will feel quite cluttered. Furthermore, options such as "Local TV" do not help the interface at all.
One more problem I have with this app is that the live content plays on the same page, but for on-demand content, the app redirects you to a new page without closing the initial one. Sure, you can find the content that you're looking for quickly, but are multiple tabs user-friendly? I don't think so.

App Homepage

Underneath the content section, you have a navigation bar. The left and right side of this navigation bar have links to the sections that pertain to that particular movie or TV show. When you open the app, you will see a search box on the right side of the screen and a menu on the left. The menu has various options, such as live TV, premium services, on-demand content, movies, TV shows, and watch lists. If you click one of the options in the menu, you will be taken to a different part of the app based on what you selected. The different sections are: movies, TV shows, watch lists, subscriptions, preferences, and about. Underneath each section is a navigation bar with links to different parts of the app.

Inner pages

The inner pages of the app don't seem very fascinating to me. The streaming page allows you to navigate and check out other content while the video is playing, so that's a positive. As for the design, you have the drop-down menu, Category Title, Search Bar, Sharing Options, and Chromecast right above the streaming window. Under these options, you'll get the resolution option. Towards the progress bar, you'll find two additional options - Cardboard and full screen.

Content

FilmOn is a good service that allows you to watch channels from across the globe. However, it often falls flat, offering a limited live TV experience. I will give you an example: you want to watch a really bad match. However, FilmOn's network TV only works in 14 major US cities, so forget about streaming content in SD or HD quality - you won't be able to stream any content at all.
With its wide range of on-demand content, the service tries to make up for what it lacks in terms of live TV. You can choose content from a variety of genres, such as ITV, BBC, CBS, EDM TV, and Kid Rock?s TV. However, you would hardly see it as a cord-cutting alternative due to its limited availability.

Desktop/Mobile experience

I tried both the free and paid versions of the app, and found that the difference between both was quite evident. The SD viewing experience was below par, as the stream kept adjusting itself between 480p and 720p. On top of that, even the audio quality wasn't pristine. In premium versions, however, the difference is palpable, but it's nowhere near the experience you get on Prime Video or Netflix. The only positive thing I can take from the streaming experience is that there were no ads.

Plans & Pricing

You can choose between two plans - Monthly and Yearly. The monthly plan costs around $19.95/month, while the year plan costs around $199/month. If you choose to go with a yearly plan, you'll get two months free.

Suggestions I have for FilmOn

If FilmOn wishes to survive and compete in a ruthless streaming market, it needs financial backing from major studios. The monthly subscription fee for their service is laughable, and the overall experience is below average. Forget me; no rational individual would be drawn to their service and happily agree to pay $20/month for nebulous content.

Conclusion

I do not find the website or app attractive. There is no reason why you should choose this service over Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video. The platform is lacking in content, overall appeal, and competence when it comes to streaming. Aside from user-generated titles, there is little that you would get on this platform, and that is all it has to offer.
