History and description

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard was built on a plot of land that was donated to the club by its founder, Geoffroy Guichard. The president of the club, his son Pierre, decided to name the stadium after his father. The stadium was originally built to hold 25,000 spectators and cost nearly six million francs to build. The inaugural match between AS Stéphanoise and Cannes saw the home team win the match 1-9.

The single grand stand of 800 seats, several terraces, and a running track circled the pitch at the steel works. The adjacent steel works regularly blew their fumes over the pitch.

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard underwent a major change in 1956when the running tracks were removed and the stands were remodeled in a rectangular shape.

In 1968, following the city of Saint-Etienne's acquisition of the stadium, further works were completed, including a brand new stand opposite the main stand and cover for the two kop stands. This resulted in the stadium having a capacity of almost 40,000.

The stadium was further expanded and renovated for the Euro 1984 Championships, resulting in a capacity of 48,270 spectators. During the championships it hosted two group matches.

The stadium received a further major upgrade in 1998, when seats were installed and corporate facilities were increased.

At the 1998 World Cup, Stade Geoffroy-Guichard hosted a total of five group matches and the round of 16 match between Argentina and England.

In 2011, Stade Geoffroy-Guichard was selected as a playing venue for the Euro 2016 Championships, and as a result, it had to undergo major redevelopment works.

The works involved the rebuilding or renovation of all stands, resulting in a total of 41,500 seats. These were completed before the start of the 2014/15 season.

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard hosted three first round group games and the round of 16 game between Poland and Switzerland (1-1).

How to get to Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is located in the north of Saint-Étienne, just over 2 km from the city centre and main railway station. One can walk to the stadium in about half an hour. Alternatively, one can take either tram T1 or T2 from the city centre (Place Jean Jaurès). Tram T1 goes north and stops at stop G. Guichard before continuing to stop H. Arago. Tram T2 also goes north, but it stops after a short ride at stop G and then continues to stop H. Arago. It is a 5 to 10-minute walk from there to the stadium.

From the Ch-teaucreux main rail station, one can take bus 9 in the direction of Montreynaud. Get off at stop Le Marais, and from there it is a short walk to the stadium. Buses go at least once every 15 minutes, and the ride will only take 10 minutes.

The stadium is on the left. If coming from the direction of Saint-Étienne, follow for A72 Saint-Étienne. From the A72, take exit 13 Montreynaud/Technopole and turn right toward the city. Follow for about a kilometre and turn right onto Rue Camille de Rochetaillée. After a few hundred metres turn right again onto Rue Paul et Pierre Guichard. The stadium is on the left.

Mick Dilworth wrote: I traveled to St Etienne, the city, last week and had a lot of trouble with checking into my hotel. It was really embarrassing. The stadium is in the English style, so there are lots of places to eat and drink nearby. I was there for Portugal v Iceland in the Euros, and the atmosphere was great. I was in the neutral section but Portuguese everywhere! I got lost near darkness and asked two local gendarmes for directions to my hotel. One of them shouted "be careful?" after me!

My trip to St Etienne, the city, was complicated by the difficulty of checking in to my hotel and feeling shameful about it. The stadium is in the English style and there are many places nearby to eat and drink. I was there for Portugal v Iceland in the Euros, and the atmosphere was great. I was in the neutral section but Portuguese everywhere! I came out into near darkness and got completely lost. I asked two local gendarme for directions to walk to my hotel, which was miles away. One of them shouted "be careful? after me!!".
