History and description

However, Amalfitani was determined to turn the land into a garden and so he worked tirelessly to clear the area, build pathways, and plant flowers and trees. In the early 1940s, President Amalfitani bought a plot of land from the western railroads in a swamp area. The waterlogged soil was by many deemed to be useless, but he was determined to turn it into a garden. He worked tirelessly to clear the area, build pathways, and plant flowers and trees. Thousands of spectators, including soldiers and workers, turned up to witness the match. Despite still managing to nearly completely drain the land in only two years time, the president was able to erect the bleachers of the old stadium Fortín. The Estadio Jose Amalfitani officially opened on 11 April 1943 with a match between Vélez and River Plate (2-2). Thousands of spectators, including soldiers and workers, turned up to witness the match.

Construction of a proper stadium started four years later. Works finished another four years later and on the 22nd of April 1951, a first match was played at the completed stadium.

In 1978, the Estadio Jose Amalfitani underwent renovations to meet FIFA requirements for the upcoming World Cup. Simultaneously, its capacity was increased to its current total. During the World Cup, it hosted three matches in the first group stage.

Since the stadium was built, there have been limited renovations.

How to get to Estadio Jose Amalfitan

The Estadio Jose Amalfitani is located in the Liniers area of the far west of Buenos Aires, close to the Palermo area which is popular with tourists. The distance from Buenos Aires' city centre is about 14 kilometres, while the Palermo area lies about 10 kilometres north-east. The 25 de Mayo Stadium is located in the west of Buenos Aires, near the ring road. It is close to Avenida Rivadavia, which starts in Plaza de Mayo and runs all the way west.

Board the train from station Once on September 11th, which is located slightly west of the center (about 15 minutes walking from Plaza del Congreso). Once lies also on the blue (A) and yellow (H) metro lines. Liniers Station is one of the stops on the Once-Moreno train line (or Línea Sarmiento), which has very regular service.

From Palermo, you can reach the stadium by bus 34. The bus departs from Uriarte Street and follows Juan B Justo Avenue before running directly past the stadium.

Address: Av. Juan B. Justo 9200, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires

Eat, drink, and sleep

Lying in a residential area, Estadio José Amalfitani offers little of entertainment around. However, you will undoubtedly stumble upon a local restaurant or bar. Still, eating and drinking is better done in central Buenos Aires. There is little reason to stay overnight near Estadio Jose Amalfitani, and there are no hotels nearby. The best option is to stay close to Once station, which will get you to the stadium quickly. Several excellent hotels options are Abasto Hotel and Destino Real Hotel, both of which are located close to Plaza del Congreso.

If you would like to travel a bit farther to reach the stadium, there are many hotels in the bustling Palermo area, the upscale Recoleta neighborhood, or charming San Telmo district.

Velez Sarsfield Tickets

Tickets for Velez Sarsfield matches can generally be bought from the morning of the day of the match at the ticket windows of the stadium. Ticket prices for matches vary depending on the match, but a standing place typically costs AR$ 200 and a seat at the long side AR$ 600. For high-profile matches (e.g. Boca) prices may get increased.
