The most beautiful facade in football, with a cosy and modern feel, and friendly family vibes from the stands. Het Kasteel is a Dutch icon.

History and description

After many years of fundraising, the new stadium was finally built and Sparta were able to achieve great success. The stadium underwent a major renovation in 2009 and has a capacity of 26,000. Het Kasteel, officially called Sparta Stadion, opened on October 14, 1916 with a friendly between Sparta and Rangers FC. It underwent a major renovation in 2009 and has a capacity of 26,000.

The most characteristic aspect of the new stadium was its pavilion in the shape of a castle, inspired by a castle that had stood at the site centuries earlier. Due to a lack of building materials, the planned corner towers got replaced by simple wooden entrances.

The stadium continued to develop in the late 1920s with new wooden stands, but then it remained mostly the same for the next several decades.

In the 1950s, Sparta presented plans for a new stadium with a capacity of 50,000. However, they eventually had to settle for a more modest redevelopment in which two new stands were built on both sides, resulting in a capacity of 30,000 places.

A few small renovation works were performed in the early 1990s while the state of the much-too-large stadium slowly deteriorated.

The discussion of building a new stadium in another part of Rotterdam continued, but it was ultimately decided to rebuild Het Kasteel at its present site. Works started in 1999.

The castle pavilion, the only remaining part of the old stadium, was moved from one of the ends to the center of one of the sides when the pitch was turned 90 degrees.

How to get to Het Kasteel

The Castle is located in the Spangen area in the west of Rotterdam and is just under 3 kilometers from Rotterdam's main railway station and the city center. The Kasteel is a 5-10 minute walk away from the metro stop Marconiplein. The metro stop can be reached with lines A, B, and C which can all be boarded at the stop Beurs in the city centre.

Alternatively, you can catch tram 8 from the main railway station or any of the various city centre stops (e.g. Beurs or Euromast). Take the tram in the direction of Spangen, and get off at Spartastraat stop. The tram runs in a roundabout way, which means it takes 30 minutes to arrive.

The tram 21 and 23 go in a more direct way, though they take a few more minutes to walk. You can take the tram from the main railway station (direction Woudhoek or Holy), and get off at stop PC Hooftplein. The journey takes 12 minutes.

Address: Spartapark Noord 1, 3027 VW Rotterdam
