The stadium has also been used for various other sport events including handball, rugby, volleyball and track and field. In 2016, a new expansion project increased the stadium's capacity to 64,000 spectators. The stadium has been upgraded several times, most notably for the 2006 Asian Games, which increased its capacity to 40,000 seats.

In 2011, the Khalifa International Stadium hosted multiple matches including the final between Japan and Australia (1-0).

It is situated in the city of Doha and has a seating capacity of around 43,000. Khalifa International Stadium has been the standard playing venue for the Qatar national team and it has also occasionally hosted international friendlies of other teams, such as Argentina and Brazil. It is located in the city of Doha and has a seating capacity of around 43,000.

Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup in 2010, and Khalifa International Stadium was naturally proposed as one of the playing venues. However, an extensive upgrade was needed before it could be used.

The stadium renovation project commenced in 2014 and included the refurbishment of all stands, additional seating, additional hospitality facilities, and the construction of a large innovative roof membrane that covers seventy percent of the stadium. The iconic arch was replaced with a new one and complemented with a second one.

The stadium was finished in the summer of 2017, making it the first 2022 World Cup stadium to be completed.

In 2019, the Khalifa International Stadium was the venue of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
