History and description

Stadio Luigi Ferraris was built in 1910 after Genoa businessman and politician, Musso Piantelli, came up with the idea to use the ground inside a racecourse for a football pitch. His proposal was accepted and the new stadium opened on January 22, 1911. The stadium originally consisted of one wooden stand, which it quickly expanded in the 1920s and 1930s to a capacity of about 30,000 places.

In 1933, the stadium was renamed to Luigi Ferraris Stadium in honour of the former captain of Genoa who had died in the first World War.

One year later, the circular stadium hosted the round of 16 match between Spain and Brazil (3-1) at the 1934 World Cup.

In 1984, Genoa moved to its new stadium, the Luigi Ferraris.

In the following decades, the stadium was gradually expanded to a maximum capacity of about 55,700 people in the 1980s.

Construction of the characteristic new stadium, designed by architect Vittoria Gregotti, started in 1987 and was completed in 1989. This allowed Genoa and Sampdoria to keep playing at the stadium.

The three group matches and the round of 16 match between the Republic of Ireland and Romania were played at the stadium during the World Cup.

Since the last decade, very few renovations have been made to the stadium. The state of the stadium has slowly deteriorated, and both Genoa and Sampdoria have been considering either redeveloping Stadio Luigi Ferraris, or building a new stadium altogether. However, as of now there are no concrete plans in place.

How to get to Stadio Luigi Ferraris

It has a capacity of 45,000 people and was opened in 1926. Luigi Ferraris Stadium is located near the north end of Genoa in the Marassi area and has a capacity of 45,000 people. It was opened in 1926. The stadium is located 1.5 km from Genoa's historic city center but can be accessed in a circular way from the south to avoid going up and down the hill between the center and stadium.

The stadium is accessible by foot from Genova Brignole train station, which is served primarily by regional trains. Follow the Bisagno River inland for about a kilometer before arriving at Brignole train station, which is located on the western edge of Genoa's city center.

From Brignole, you can take bus 480 or 482 in the direction of S. Eusebio. It is just a 7-minute ride to stop Marassi/Stadio.

The Genova Principe train station, where the long-distance trains arrive, is located further away, about 3.5 kilometers from the stadium. You can take a train to Brignole from the Genova Principe train station.

Get off at stop Bobbio5/Stadio. You can catch bus 12 or 13 from metro station San Giorgio. Take the bus in the direction of Prato, and get off at stop Bobbio 5 /Stadio. Alternatively, you can take bus 14 from metro station De Ferrari in the direction of Prato. Get off at stop Bobbio 5 /Stadio.

On matchdays, special bus services run from Caricamento (CM), Piazzale Kennedy (KM and 47), and Principe train station (SM). These services connect fans arriving at the various locations.

If arriving by car, take exit Genova Est from the A12. Drive to the city and later on the signs to the stadium.

Useful websites

The official website for Genoa club CFC is genoacfc.it, while UC Sampdoria's website is sampdoria.it. Genova-turismo.it provides tourist information about Genoa, and AMT provides public transport information. Trenitalia.com provides information about train times and fares. I attended the Genoa vs Frosinone game and purchased tickets for Distinti- along the side- for ?30 from the ticket booth across the street from the Curva Nord. Passport required and speaking loudly is necessary as you can't see who's in the booth selling you the tickets! There was a great family atmosphere in that stand and it was a super atmosphere generally around the ground.

Thank you for the advice. The stadium is a 20-minute walk from the Brignole metro/train station. I attended the Genoa vs Frosinone game and bought tickets for Distinti- along the side- for ?30 from ticket booth across the street from the Curva Nord. A passport required and speaking loudly as you can?t see who?s in the booth selling you the tickets! A great family atmosphere in that stand and super atmosphere generally around the ground.

- There are also a number of food trucks located near the venue.

It was open on the day of the match. A ticket for the upper tier of one of the ends cost about ?30.00.
