History and description

The Maracanã stadium was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the world's largest football stadium. Construction on the Maracanã stadium began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later. The stadium officially opened on 16 June 1950 with a friendly between a selection of players from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Eight days after the opening match of the 1950 World Cup, Maracanã hosted the first round group stage match between Brazil and Mexico (4-0). It would host four more matches in the first round group stage, as well as a further three in the second round stage. The deciding final match between Uruguay and Brazil (2-1) was held at Maracanã Stadium on July 16th, 1950.

The stadium was renamed in 1966 following the death of Brazilian journalist Mário Filho, but people usually refer to it as Maracanã.

Maracanã barely changed until the 1990s, when a deathly accident and resulting safety measures greatly reduced its capacity. Shortly later, it got converted into an all-seater.

Brazil was awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007 and it was clear that Maracanã would host the final. Therefore, it needed a massive redevelopment in order to meet the tournament's requirements.

The stadium was rebuilt in 2010 and a new roof was installed with a capacity of 79,000 seats. It reopened on 2 June 2013 with a friendly international between Brazil and England (2-2).

The 2014 World Cup was held at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Seven matches were played there, including the quarter-final between Germany and France (1-0) and the final between Germany and Argentina (1-0).

The Maracanã Stadium is owned by the state of Rio de Janeiro, but it is usedregularly by Flamengo and Fluminense. Other clubs based in Rio, such as Botafogo and Vasco da Gama, also use the stadium from time to time.

How to get to Maracana

The stadium is able to hold over 80,000 people and was originally built for the 1938 World Cup. Maracanã is located in east Rio de Janeiro and is about 5 kilometers from downtown. It lies about 12 kilometers north of Copacabana and Ipanema beach areas. The stadium was originally built for the 1938 World Cup. Trains leave from both stations every six minutes. The stadium can easily be accessed by metro and train. Maracanã station is a stop on metro line 2, which can be boarded in downtown Rio or the Flamengo and Botafogo areas. It can also be reached with a transfer from line 1, which runs from the Copacabana and Ipanema areas. Trains leave from both stations every six minutes.

commuting by train from the Central do Brasil railway station is an option if you are either at the station or are coming from the nearby central bus terminal. Otherwise, you would get off the metro to get on a train, while the metro can bring you there directly.

If opting to take a train, take the red Ramal Deodoro line and get off at Maracanã station.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Maracana

The Maracanã Stadium is located in an undesirably residential area and there is little to do in the area around it. It is not one of Rio de Janeiro's better areas, and so there is no reason to head to the stadium early before the match. Eating and drinking are better done in more tourist-y areas of Rio de Janeiro. There are a few affordable hotels close to the stadium, but if you have more money to spend you'll get a better experience if you stay in one of the many hotels closer to the beaches in tourist areas. The stadium is easily reached by metro.

An overview of hotels near Maracanã is available here, and further options in Rio de Janeiro can be found here.

Flamengo Tickets

Tickets for Flamengo matches can be bought online, from the ticket windows of Maracanã, at the club facilities at Avenida Borges de Medeiros 997 in the Lagoa - Ipanema area, or any of the other sales outlets. Tickets for upper sections will range from $100.00 to $350.00, while VIP tickets will be around $350.00

Flamengo regularly plays one or two of their home matches at the Maracana each season, so it's worth checking the match details before heading up to the stadium.

Fluminense Tickets

Tickets for Fluminense matches can be bought online at Futebolcard, at the ticket windows of Marcanã, or at any of the sales outlets, which include the centrally-located club office at Rua Álvaro Chaves 41 in the Laranjeiras area. Tickets for events usually start at sixty Brazilian reais. Identification is necessary in order to purchase tickets, and some events may have a charge for identification.

Fluminense occasionally plays their home matches at other stadiums across Rio, in particular the low-profile ones. Make sure to check the match details before heading up to the Maracana.

Relevant Internet links

The official websites of CR Flamengo, Fluminense FC, and Rio de Janeiro's Metrorio provide information on the clubs and metro systems. Supervia provides information on both train systems. The day before I went to watch Flamengo at Ilha do Urubu Stadium and paid three times more for the ticket than I would have had to at Maracana. Maracana is well worth visiting.

The seats are very comfortable, the fans are noisy and sing and dance all game, and the Metro stops outside the stadium. The day before I went to watch Flamengo at Ilha do Urubu(Luso brasileiro) Stadium, I paid 3 times more for the ticket, and Maracana is well worth visit.
