Movies Anywhere is a cloud-based digital locker and streaming platform run by The Walt Disney Group. It allows you to enjoy the biggest blockbusters from major networks, combining your movie libraries into one. Most of us get tired by the task of navigating different streaming networks and accounts, eliminating all the hassles of movie watching.
Personally, I prefer to have my movies and TV shows organized on one platform. That's where Movies Anywhere comes in. It may not have its own content, but it does have a library filled with content from supported networks. So, if you have content on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes or Vudu, you can sync it with Movies Anywhere and you'll have everything on this network.

Most digital movies purchased online can be synced to different platforms, making Movies Anywhere a digital bridge between online vendors and content consumers. So far, Movies Anywhere has been able to sync with the platforms mentioned above, as well as networks such as Microsoft and Xfinity TV.
Backed by Major Studios
Movies Anywhere is backed by leading studios such as Universal, Disney, Fox, Sony and Warner Bros. As a result, any film produced by these studios will appear in the Movies Anywhere app, whether you purchased the movie or not. Not only do all these movies get synced with the Movies Anywhere app but also with other partner networks.
How does Movies Anywhere model work?
It's quite simple. The digital movies you purchase or the codes you redeem will allow you to watch movies across all of the platforms mentioned above. Thus, your iTunes movies can be watched on Android and your Vudu movies can be streamed via Apple TV.
History
Movies Anywhere was first launched in 2014 in partnership with Disney Movies Anywhere. It later added other platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, FandangoNOW, Microsoft, Google Play Movies & TV, and Vudu along with Verizon Fios TV and Xfinity subscribers in 2017.
Design
There is not much to complain about the design. I like it. It is simple and quite colorful. From subtle fonts to movie collection banners, everything is minimalistic and straight forward. I love the blue and purple color tones throughout the website inspired by its logo.
Homepage Banner
If you look at the website's homepage banner, there is a clean and minimal design complete with supporting text. From the banner itself, you can make out that the platform is powered by major studios. On the left, there is a CTA button which reads "Join-Now Free?" with subtext - "Open to US residents 13+?"
Explore Tab
The three main sections of the website are Explore, Redeem, and My Movies. If you click on explore, you will be taken to a new page with a focal movie banner. The categories on this page include New Releases, Daily Deals, Game Over, Holiday Action, From the Earth to the Stars, and Chillout with Family. Each of these categories has further subcategories which can be found by clicking on the Details button next to that category. For example, clicking on New Releases will take you to pages with information about all of the new releases for that week.
Redeem Tab
If you click on the "Redeem" tab, you will be directed to a dark page with grey text. This is the dullest page on the website and there is a rectangular box where you are required to add your digital code. Once you add the code, you can click on "Redeem" to complete the process. If you don't know how to redeem, there are steps mentioned below the "Redeem" button.
Membership
Joining Movies Anywhere is free for US residents above the age of thirteen. If you are not familiar with the sign-up process, I would like to simplify it for you.
You can sign up using your Facebook, Google, or email account. Once you sign up, you will be asked to link the two accounts.
- Once connected, click on Movies and TV Shows to begin adding your movies and TV shows
Remember, if you have signed up for Movies Anywhere through your Amazon, iTunes, Xfinity, Vudu, FandangoNOW or Microsoft account, you don't need this app yet. However, if you want all your digital assets in one place, here's how you can add accounts manually:
- Visit MoviesAnywhere.com from your browser
- Sign-up if you haven't done it yet
- Click on the user profile on the top right-hand corner
- Click on Manage Retailers
- Click on Connect to link individual accounts
- Enter the account credentials to provide permission to complete the connection
- Once connected, click on Movies and TV Shows to begin adding your movies and TV shows
After completing this process, all of your digital movies will appear under the My Movies category. Before moving on to content, I would like to point out that not every movie is available on Movies Anywhere. For example, Paramount movies are not currently streaming partners, thus if you purchase a Paramount movie through Vudu it will not appear in your My Movies list.
Content
In light of my personal experience, I would like to discuss how content syncs. Based on my own experiences, I bought Avengers Infinity War on iTunes and then linked my account through Movies Anywhere. As a result, I was able to watch the same movie on Google Play, Vudu and Amazon apps. This means that the content is available across all major networks and it provides you with the ability to stream the film on a variety of media players, such as Android phones and Roku players.
Platforms onboard
Each of the following services offers a variety of movies and TV shows to watch.
- Apple iTunes offers a variety of movies and TV shows to watch.
- Amazon has a wide selection of movies and TV shows to watch.
- Vudu offers a variety of movies and TV shows to watch.
- Xfinity (for Xfinity TV subscribers only) offers its own unique selection of movies and TV shows, which are not found on the other services.
- Google Play Movies and TV offers a variety of movies and TV shows to watch, as well as renting/purchasing videos.
- Microsoft (Xbox and Windows 10) has a large selection of movies and TV shows to watch, as well as streaming live tv/video services such as Hulu and DIRECTV NOW.
- FandangoNow is an all-inclusive service that offers access to both digital downloads (movies/TV Shows) and physical tickets for movie theaters.
You can shop for movies from any of the above platforms, no matter the app or device, and you can play the movie.
Movie studios on board
These are the major motion picture studios in the United States.
Even though Lionsgate, Paramount and MGM/UA are not currently part of Movies Anywhere, there are still over 1000+ titles that you can enjoy on the network. Some of the titles that you miss because of the above studios not being a part of the network include Kirk and Spock, Godfather, Mission Impossible and Indiana Jones to name a few.
4K Experience depends upon your device
Movies Anywhere supports 4K streaming. Watching movies in 4K quality is straightforward. All of it depends on the hardware on which you're streaming. So, it can be a 4K movie but if your Android phone doesn't support 4K yet, you won't be able to enjoy the 4K experience. Basically, if you purchased a Movie in 4K and are streaming Movies Anywhere in a device that doesn't support 4K, it'll show up at 1080p max. Thus, it's crucial that you switch to a digital device that supports 4K.
Desktop/Mobile experience
Movies Anywhere is the front-end to the film library. If there is a film you haven't bought yet and would like to watch it on Movies Anywhere, you can click the "buy" option and it will show you the video with its vendors.
Apart from these devices, there are apps available for Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Amazon Fire Tablets and Chromecast which work seamlessly on major web browsers on MAC and PCs. Though there is no gaming console support yet, Disney is working on improving its compatibility.
How many screens can I stream with Movies Anywhere at once?
You can get up to four streams at once. Each viewer can watch different films at once through Movies Anywhere. As for the same title, you can only stream a maximum of two streams.
Can I restrict the movies my kids have access to?
Setting up profiles for family members is similar to how Netflix works. Each profile can be customized with different watch ratings. This means that if you have children and want to assign them a profile, you can limit them to PG, G, PG-13, R and all. You can also lock their profile so the age-restricted movies will not appear on their devices.

Suggestions I have for Movies Anywhere
Movie Anywhere is doing a great job expanding its content library. If they add gaming console compatibility, there is not much they need to do.
Conclusion
Personally, I do not see any reason why you should not try this service. Especially, if you have purchased a movie on any of the platforms mentioned above, you should definitely try Movies Anywhere.
