History and description

The Olympic Stadium, which officially opened on 20 November 1952, hosted its first football match nine days later. The Estadio Olimpico Universitario was the centerpiece of the 1968 Olympic Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, and the athletic events.

The stadium was one of the playing venues of the 1986 World Cup. It hosted three group match and the round of 16 match between Italy and France (0-2). At that time, it could host about 68,000 spectators.

Over the years, the capacity of the stadium decreased gradually due to safety measures and refurbishments. First, it decreased to around 63,000 during most of the 2000s and more recently it decreased to 52,000 seats.

The eastern side of the stadium features a mural of renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera. His unfinished project of covering the entire exterior of the stadium with murals was unfortunately cut short by his death in 1957.

The Estadio Olimpico Universitario is part of a complex of UNAM university buildings that has been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

How to get to Estadio Olimpico Universitario

The Estadio Olímpico Universitario is located at the south-west of Mexico City, within the main campus of the UNAM university, Mexico's largest university. It is home to the football (soccer) team Club América, who have played at this stadium since its inauguration in 1968. The stadium can be reached by car following the Avenida Insurgentes Sur. It is one of the city's principal avenues, and after following it south, the stadium will appear on the right.

If using public transport to reach the stadium, you can choose between the metrobus and the metro. Metrobus is generally the more convenient option, as it stops closer to the stadium.

Line 2 also runs along Insurgentes, but mainly serves the eastern side of the city from Santa Fe to the airport. It can be boarded at several stops near Centro, including in Colonia Juárez and in the Zona Rosa.

Alternatively, take Line 3 to station Copilco, find your way to the UNAM university campus, and cross the campus to the stadium. The walk will take about 25 minutes.

Address: Avenida Insurgentes Sur s/n, Ciudad Universitaria, Coyoacán, México DF

Pumas Tickets

Tickets for Pumas matches can be bought online through Ticketmaster, or at one of the Ticketmaster sales outlets. Tickets are available at the gate on the day of the match. Pumas usually do not sell out.

Prices for tickets depend on the opponent, but typically range from MXN 140.00 for a seat behind the goal to MXN 230.00 for lower parts of the long sides. Prices increase to between MXN 180.00 and MXN 290.00 for high-profile matches.

So take precautions or arrive very early to claim one of the few covered seats. After the match we got quickly out of the stadium without problems to take the metrobus back to central Mexico City.

Date visited: 18 September 2011 Match visited: Pumas UNAM-Toluca 4-1

The PUMAS were one of the most popular teams in Mexico and were reigning champions at the time we visited them. They typically play their matches on Sundays, which means that many people arrive to their matches still wet from showering.

We arrived at the stadium easily by Metrobus. Finding the right stop wasn't hard as it just meant following the crowds in PUMAS gear.

However, people were very friendly and assisted us in identifying the different parts. It took us about 15 minutes queuing before we arrived at the front of the line and another 10 minutes going through security checks and locating our seats. So better not arrive at the last minute.

It's definitely worth taking the time to visit them. It is not allowed to carry any belts inside the stadium. Even though there is special security to guard your belt during the match - which is in fact reliable - you may feel uncomfortable at first giving off your belt (which happened to me at other matches). There are loads of salesmen around selling PUMAS jerseys and food and drinks. It is definitely worth taking the time to visit them.

We were assigned seats in the long end of the stadium, technically the main stand, though there is little difference between the stands. No fixed seat numbers, so there was free seating on concrete benches. Toluca played Pumas, a non-rival, so it was easy to find a place and get tickets.

The fervent fans seemed to have their area at the main stand, quite unusual. Though the atmosphere never got aggressive and the crowd seemed to be more upper class than at other Mexican clubs, it was nonetheless strange for them to have their territory at the main stand. The crowd did seem to be very homogeneous, with practically all of them wearing PUMAS jerseys and chanting along with the more common chants.

The match began with the university hymn, with everyone singing along with their fist up in the air. One particular chant seemed to be the preference of most of the people. Additionally, there was the typical Latin American salsa type of band playing along. A nice atmosphere, but nothing too exciting. Maybe it was the hour?

Of course, when it's raining you're likely to get wet. So take precautions or arrive very early to claim one of the few covered seats.

We quickly got out of the stadium after the match without any problems and took the metrobus back to central Mexico City.
