Over the course of the last thirty years, the television industry seemed to be almost stubbornly skeptical of the internet. However, computers quickly unseated televisions as the new hearth of the home, and now only a handful of cable networks have managed to survive.
Some companies, such as Netflix, quickly transitioned from offering DVD rental through the postal service to becoming the company synonymous with streaming itself. This was clearly seen in the increasing popularity of referring to all streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video) as simply ?Netflix?. This phrase is often used for situations where watching television or movies would be enjoyable and relaxational, such as "Netflix and Chill."
By 2020, virtually every traditional cable network had adapted to the times by embedding live and on-demand TV streaming right onto their websites (although, more often than not, viewers were still required to sign in via their traditional cable provider in order to watch anything). Some networks have gone so far as to put themselves in direct competition with the behemoth that is Netflix by creating their own premium streaming platforms. HBO is a prime example of a more traditional network that was quick to bridge the gap between TV and the internet (in fact, there are three separate platforms on which you can stream HBO content: HBO Max, HBO Now, and HBO Go).
Disney, too, finally joined the streaming party just last year when they introduced their all-new streaming platform, Disney Plus. Better late than never, right? NBC, however, has recently decided to throw its hat into the ring - their premium streaming service, Peacock, just launched earlier this month (July 15th 2020).
If you're looking for a channel that has something for everyone, NBC is definitely it.
Although Peacock offers a large selection of syndicated content, it is not just a streaming service for NBC Original content. Peacock also provides a great deal of syndicated movies and TV shows, which makes it an excellent alternative to Netflix or Hulu. I don?t think Netflix will be able to keep up with Peacock?s subscriber base - especially because The Office will be exclusive to Peacock starting on January 1st, 2021.
Peacock offers a diverse blend of content, including favorite NBC original shows, hundreds of syndicated TV series and classic movies, as well as live sports events from the English Premier League. In terms of quality and quantity, Peacock is starting to look pretty appealing, don't you think?
I would like to introduce you to Peacock, a new streaming service that has a lot of content to offer. This service is very important because it allows you to know for certain whether or not it is worth your money to subscribe. To get started, please take a look at everything that the service has to offer and judge for yourself whether or not it is worth your while. There is a lot of information here, so I will let you go ahead and explore on your own.
Design
Prior to Peacock, the only streaming service I could really compare it to was Apple TV. Both of those services have a very sleek and modern design. I love the way that Peacock looks, and in my opinion it is the best-looking streaming service out there right now. It has the same clean lines and app-like navigation as Apple TV, only with more available channels and more options.
Some of the usability issues I noticed were that there was no ?skip? or ?next episode? button, which made it more annoying to binge watch my favorite comfort shows than it should be (this is quite a big miss, too, considering the fact that Peacock is staking quite a bit of its credit to snatching up its exclusive rights to shows like The Office and Parks and Rec). You have to go through the trouble of returning to the episode list (which is also not conveniently accessible while watching content) every time you want to jump ahead in a series.
So, in short, I would say that the peacock feature looks phenomenal. Unfortunately, though, this comes at the cost of user experience.
Content and Features
Peacock makes up for its usability shortcomings with the quality and quantity of its content. Starting next year, Peacock will be the only streaming service where you'll be able to watch America's two favorite comedies: The Office and Parks and Rec. It has every other NBC show you can think of.
Peacock offers a great deal of content, including movies, news, original Peacock shows, and live sporting events. I believe that it is more important to invest in our streaming future by signing up for Peacock now than to worry about current availability of NBC shows on other streaming services. Most NBC shows that are currently available on Peacock will be available on other streaming services next year, so signing up for Peacock now may be the best decision for you.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
This new app needs to work out some kinks. It looks nice, but the functionality is subpar. There is no mini-screen streaming, for instance, which allows you to continue watching content while you browse for something else. There are also many reviews on the Apple App Store that claim the live streaming quality is not great.
I have a complaint about the service's device limitations. Right now, it is not available on Roku or Firestick and there are no plans in the works to make it available on either of these platforms. However, if you use a Vizio or LG smart TV, an Android TV, an Xbox One, or a Chromecast, you can fully enjoy the Peacock service.
Pricing and Plans
One thing that sets Peacock apart from other streaming services is the fact that it offers free streaming content with no credit card required. However, as with all free services, there are limits to what is available. If you want access to the full range of Peacock's features, including premium content with no ads, you'll need to subscribe to the $4.99/month Premium Plus plan. Alternatively, for an ad-free experience you can pay $5 more per month on the Premium plan.
In other words, Peacock is not offering anything revolutionary in the way of monthly payments. To the service's credit, however, they do not charge you anything extra in order to take advantage of the live sports streaming, which actually is quite rare in the world of streaming services.
Suggestions that I have for Peacock
I believe that Peacock should do more usability and functionality tests in order to better understand what their users want from their streaming service. Additionally, I would like to see them conduct a few more focus groups in order to get a more detailed understanding of user desires. However, I am hopeful that the company can improve upon these deficiencies over time.
Second, Peacock needs to work on its accessibility issue. Frankly, they should have had this already taken care of long ago. The fact that I can?t stream Peacock on my Roku TV is unacceptable.
