Anime, as an art form, has become increasingly popular within western society. Several aspects such as anime, cosplay, manga, and games have taken over the world. The visual narrative and compelling storylines have been able to capture the imagination of audiences - especially young adults and teens. With great content, the viewers and readers are able to gratify their personal perceptions owing to mind-boggling plot and character development. Though anime began its journey in the 1900s, it's only in the last 30-40 years that it has been able to penetrate to the other side.

History of Anime

. The oldest animation, ?Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban?, was released over a hundred years ago in the year 1917. However, in 2005 an undated three seconds film consisting of fifty frames was found in Kyoto. Naoki Matsumoto, the discoverer, believes that this film can very well predate the original 1917 release. It is incredible to see that an increasing number of people are growing interested in this form of art- which is an inexpensive way of storytelling when you compare it with live-action films. Anime as a mainstream content genre was inspired by Disney's style of animation, most notably, Bambi and ?Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?.

Inspired by Disney

After drawing inspiration from Disney, Japanese cartoonists created their own versions of animated stories in the early 1900s. Shimokawa Oten, Kobayashi Shokai's predecessor, rolled out FIVE movies during this time period. Kobayashi Shokai is credited with creating more than 15 anime movies as an animator. According to Forbes, the anime industry is worth a whopping $12.5 billion. It's no surprise that with such an impressive figure, many people are curious about what anime is and how it came to be so popular. To help out those newcomers, I've written this brief history of Japan's most famous animation format. After reading this article, hopefully you'll be more informed about what anime is and be in a better position to decide if it's something you want to explore further. Finally, we'll move on to our main topic - r/AnimeSuggest.

My recent experience on r/AnimeSuggest

Quite recently, I voted "up" on two posts on this subreddit. The first was a suggestion where a user was asking for a Rom-Com where you don't have to wait until the last episode, 2 seasons, or 2 movies, for a single kiss. The requirement was clearly stated and thus he was able to generate over 200 responses from fellow anime heads. My second experience was a post wherein the user wanted suggestions for a Rich guy/poor girl, old-ish romcom. His query attracted more than 370 upvotes and received more than 50 suggestions. That was really cool to see so many people helping you watch what they perceive as the content that fits your needs.

How to access r/AnimeSuggest?

Moderators of r/AnimeSuggest

With 192,000 subscribers to anime on Reddit, it is a medium-sized community. This number is not small and thus requires more than a couple of members to handle the day-to-day proceedings on this subreddit. At the time of writing this review, there were six mods on this page - ?AutoModerator?, ?AnimeSuggestMed?, ?messem10?, ?chiefnoah?, ?Herbrax?, and ?Dorrn J?.

Why should you follow r/AnimeSuggest?

The r/AnimeSuggest subreddit is filled with lots of interactive content. On average, it attracts 20-30 responses per question. even a basic question like "Is Haikyuu worth watching?" gets nearly 900 upvotes and 210 comments. The best part about this community is that everyone is very cooperative, so you don't have to worry about thinking twice before posting. Most of the content on this platform revolves around suggestions for anime, reviews of anime, character development, and listicles.

Community Engagement

AnimeSuggest, although not the largest anime community on Reddit, has a high engagement rate. For each post that I browsed today, more than 50 of them had over 20-25 responses. This reassures me that the members of this subreddit are knowledgeable and able to provide quality advice. I myself posted a question regarding which anime I should watch next, and based upon my input, many people recommended Death Note. And after completing the series, my faith in this subreddit has grown over time.

Browsing & Navigation

Since most of the content on this platform is text-based, you will not face any loading issues when browsing and navigating across various sections. You can stay up-to-date with the community even when you are on a stable internet connection. There are a few ads in the feed and on the sidebar but those do not hinder your browsing experience. They are well-placed keeping the overall user experience in mind.

Reddit Gold

Though the amount of upvotes on each post are less, the comments and interactions within the community are too good for a subreddit this size. Even in regard to Reddit Gold, I saw more than 15-20 golds across popular posts in the past 6 months. A fascinating aspect of this subreddit is that you'll find more gold being awarded in the comment section than to the actual post itself. And that's understandable given it's the user comments that provide helpful content.

Filter by flair

I am not unhappy with this particular section. There are four main options: ?Meta?, ?What to Watch??, ?What?s this From? (unsolved)?, and ?Series Specific Question?. These are quality filter options given that you can get your queries solved within a short period if you use the right flair. Most of the time, it happens that I cannot recollect a certain scene from a certain anime, and so I just use the image and add the ?What?s this From?? filter and the fellow community members are at the rescue.

There is no definitive answer to this question as it can vary based on individual preferences.
