TV viewing devices have changed the way we consume content. With the rise of various streaming set-top media centers, people are cutting the cord at an alarming rate. Can you believe that Apple rolled out this next-gen streaming set-top media center more than a decade ago? Back then, it was considered a luxury that was way ahead of its time. And now, with Chromecast, Firestick, and others battling it out with Apple TV, there are three variants offered by the Cupertino based company- each providing a different level of quality. The base variant offers a standard 1080p HD quality but the two expensive models provide 4K HDR output.
Regardless of the streaming service you choose, you would be able to consume the same amount of content. You can access a gargantuan library of streaming services, including the likes of Hulu, HBO Now, DirecTV Now, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime. What makes Apple TV so good is that it is one of the easiest to use media centers in the world with an extremely simple design. But at the same time, it does cost $100 more than any of its nearest competitors, and so if you don't mind spending that money for form over factor, Apple TV can be an obvious choice.
How does Apple TV work?
Apple TV, like other streaming media centers, requires the internet to function. You can connect the device using your HDMI port on the TV. Once you boot the device, it will guide you through the setup process. Finally, you'll need to enter your Apple ID, similar to the one you use on iPad or iPhone. This is to ensure that everything is in sync and even the data on your device - stored on iCloud - can be accessed using the Apple TV.
I would like to continue discussing the product itself, but first I want to talk about the community that surrounds it- specifically, r/appletv on Reddit. This subreddit is a great place to share news, apps, and tech support for Apple TV; in fact, you can learn a lot here. Keep reading and you'll be well equipped to tackle any Apple TV questions you may have.
My memorable experience on r/appletv
As per what I recall, I upvoted a post where a fellow user BonsTempsRouler posted a video suggesting that you can navigate Apple TV using Xbox One/PS4 controller in TVOS 13. Just a few months later, I saw a complete setup regarding the same topic, including streaming session where another user was enjoying 1080p streaming in a hassle-free manner. It's good to see how creatively people can mix and match tech to come up with the solution that fits their needs the best.
About r/appletv - Community & Members
The community has 79,500 members, of which 300-450 members are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on September 1, 2010, and has a small apple-centric niche community. Given that Apple TV is not the biggest and brightest thing in the TV space, it would be unfair to judge them based on numbers.
How to access r/appletv?
If you are not already a Reddit member, you will need to create an account and confirm your email address before joining the subreddit. Once you have done so, you will be able to follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post anything on any of the subreddits.
Moderators of r/appletv
I am slightly disappointed with the number of mods on this page. But then I think about it and realize that the members are only 80,000, so I should not be mad. One mod per 20,000 is not that bad given most of the communities with over 5 million members have 10 mods, so that is 1 mod per 500,000 members. At the time of writing this review, I found 4 mods on r/appletv - ?xvvhiteboy,? ?missmurrr,? ?iHuy,? and ?anonboxis.?
Why should you follow r/appletv?
This community is my go-to-place to troubleshoot small issues that I encounter. It is filled with amazing content related to updates, problem-solving, compatible devices, and so on. If you are not into the tech world but want to stay up-to-date with what?s happening in the Apple TV sphere, this is the perfect community to do so. As far as the volume goes, more than two dozen posts are uploaded each day. The Apple TV navigation using Xbox One/PS4 controller received 400+ upvotes and 86 comments.
Original Shows
The most fascinating element on this page is the "Apple TV+ Original Shows" section. Under that, you'll find related groups purely focused on Original TV Shows. So, you'll find five options - r/AmazingStories - 278 members, r/TheMorningShow - 4,119 members, r/MythicQuest - 1,921 members, r/ForAllMankind - 552 members, and r/SeeTV - 2,115 members. Alongside each of these options, you'll find a "Join" button. Simply click on that to join the original shows community.
Community Engagement
For a subreddit that isn't even 100,000 strong, r/appletv does have decent community engagement. The all-time top post on this subreddit hasn't even crossed the 1000 upvotes mark. And though that's a poor engagement rate, it's still way better than r/gamemusic and nearly as good as r/Videography. A top post on any given day attracts about 20-30 upvotes and 5-6 comments.
Related Subreddits
Another interesting section in the sidebar of r/appletv is the related subreddits. You have six options to choose from - r/tvOSBeta - 1,820 members, r/AppleTVPlus - 4,213 members, r/AppleArcade - 9,427 members, r/AppleMusic - 43,544 members, and r/apple - 1.45 million members. By clicking on the Join button, you'll be able to become a part of this sub-niche community or a broader community. For instance, r/apple is the biggest apple-related subreddit, and on the opposite end, r/Siri has the least members at 4,361. Nonetheless, all of these related subreddits are active.
Reddit Gold
Since the engagement itself is not off the roof, the gold allocation is pretty scarce too. I checked about 30 top posts and threads but could not find more than three gold. Again, this is a niche where people are mostly showing off their new Apple TV, compatibility, and other gadgets related to the TV. Thus, posts like these do not attract many upvotes. On the contrary, when people help solve a problem or provide a suggestion, that is appreciated by the community, and that can be seen in the form of comments.
Filter by flair
The filter by flair option is slightly disappointing because it only allows you to tag your posts with ?Rumour? to separate them from everything else. It would be great if the mods separated all the various types of post-based upon their content. This would help to improve the diversity of content on the site.
Important rules you must know before joining r/appletv?
As an Apple TV user or individual looking to buy one, it is certainly a group that you might want to be a part of. However, there are certain rules that you need to follow in order to ensure that you don't violate the guidelines set by the moderators.
(Do not discuss or share pirated content on the subreddit. We will remove posts that do.)
Please refrain from making rude/offensive comments on the subreddit and make sure that all posts are related to Apple TV. Do not discuss or share pirated content on the subreddit.
Design
After reading the user reviews, I had very high expectations for this subreddit and it did not disappoint. The custom Apple TV logo on the black cover looks great. Even the community icon looks amazing. The only downside is that the main menus and standard Reddit sorting options are in a somewhat confusing location, but the interactive sidebar with helpful sections makes up for it. Overall, this subreddit is definitely worth checking out for anyone interested in Apple TV development.
