No one could have predicted that there would be an independent music space for video games. It's been over 50 years and the music in video games has evolved drastically. From 1972 to 2020, there has been a complete shift in paradigm, which can be accredited to the amazing technology. The progress is a result of an increase in the number of output channels, improvements in the quality of sound, and the rise of DAWs.
Digital Audio Workstations have revolutionized the audio industry. And not only are they great for gamers, many of these tracks are just as good, if not better, than iconic movie scores. One of my favorite tracks of all time is "Legends Never Die" from League of Legends 2017. I am fascinated with what OSTs can bring to a game and licensed gaming music in particular. Based on my research and journals I consulted, I believe that music has a great impact on our moods in games.
Today, we are going to review one of the most popular online communities for game music - r/gamemusic. On this platform, you will find amazing content uploaded by players, creators, composers, remixers, and other people involved in gaming.

My recent experience on r/gamemusic

I upvoted the most recent post by user TensionSpice which was an Original score for a game called Gunslingers of the wasteland vs. The Zombies from Mars. I was surprised to see that this post had two upvotes and no comments at all, though it was posted 24 hours ago. The track was amazing, and I would have loved to see more people hear it. I even shared it on my social profile.

About r/gamemusic - Community & Members

The subreddit r/gamemusic is a community for creators who love video game music. Members can listen to and submit to new or old original game scores. If you love nostalgic old retro video game music or modern-day orchestral scores, you'll love r/gamemusic! The community has 91,200 members, out of which 100-200 members are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on March 31, 2010, and has since developed into an amazing producer and listener-based community.

How to access r/gamemusic?

If you are not already a Reddit member, you will need to create an account and confirm your email address before joining the gaming music subreddit. Once you have done so, you will be able to follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post anything on any of the subreddits.

Moderators of r/gamemusic

At the time of writing this review, five moderators were present on r/Videography - ?psycosulu,? ?NickTheNewbie,? ?OpOrtsac,? ?Seris,? and ?Draskon.?

Why should you follow r/gamemusic?

There is no lack of quality content on r/gamemusic. There are original scores, remixes/covers, ost tracks, playlists, and various news items on this subreddit. More than 100 posts are updated each day. There are budding composers as well as experienced musicians who share great music on this platform. The creativity of the members of this community is underappreciated, mainly due to a lack of interaction. On average, the top post of the day manages to surpass 50 upvotes. As for the content variety, you'll find reviews, remixes/covers, OSTs, playlists, announcements, news items, and much more. Even if you're slightly interested in gaming music, this subreddit will keep you hooked.

Community Engagement

Though r/gamemusic may not be the most active community, it does have high-quality content. The frequency of posts is excellent, but few people interact with each post. The engagement rate - upvotes and comments - is not good. Even some of the more popular subreddits like r/anime and r/movies attract better user interaction than r/gamemusic. The average comment ratio on each post is only 2-5.

Browsing & Playback

A benefit of being a part of a small community such as r/gamemusic is that it provides a great browsing experience. The majority of the scores that are shared on the platform come from YouTube, and so there are generally no playback issues. I streamed on this platform for nearly an hour, and I used 80 MB of my data listening to music tracks on this subreddit. If you have limited data, I would advise not to stream this sub using your internet connection.

Dedicated Rooms

A particular aspect that I liked a lot about the chatroom on r/gamemusic was the variety of chat rooms- General Chat, VGM: OST & Remix, Gaming, Any Music, and Advertise. There were more than 100 members in each community. Based upon these rooms, it was clear that this sub catered to a larger audience with preference to producers looking to share their music. By being a part of a certain room, you would be able to make the most of the opportunities that came your way. Before moving ahead, I would like to share certain points about each room.
2. Please use the other rooms for Self-advertising; General Chat is for general chat. 1. In order to keep our rooms clean and orderly, self-promotion will be temporarily removed. We ask that you please use the other rooms for this purpose. General chat is intended for more general discussions.
here! Please use this thread to share music from video games or your favorite remixes of VG music. 137 members here!
This is a discussion forum for all things gaming: discuss video games in general, game systems, genres, and more.
If it's not a VG OST or Remixes, it goes here - 95 members.
. Plug your work here, whether you're making a video game, music, arts and crafts, or anything else. 171 Members are here to help.

Release and Upcoming Albums

Another impressive section of the website is the "Released and upcoming albums." As a game developer, this information will help you a lot. Under this section, you'll find various recent releases, such as Pixel Mixers - Donkey Kong Country Album, Overclocked Remix - Arcadia Legends, and Multiplayer 4:Rescue. New music is updated each week, and it's incredible for developers looking for copyright-free sound.

Filter by flair

The filter by flair section on this sub is a great way to find content that interests you. There are seven options, ?Discussion?, ?Original?, ?Remix/Cover?, ?OST?, ?Playlist?, ?Announcement?, and ?News?. Each of these options is self-explanatory, and when you post any content, you have to tag it using the flair. So, if you're sharing a remix track, make sure to post the link and add the "Remix/Cover" flair. This allows the interested audience to engage with the post.

Important rules you must know before joining r/gamemusic?

Conclusion

Music in video games is designed to match the game genre. Most game genres have motivating, upbeat music, whereas others have orchestral symphonies, spooky tunes, and dramatic pads. Everything depends upon the genre; if you are playing PUBG, the intro music by Tom Salta has given it an amazing motivational score that fits the theme of the game. If you enjoy that, I am sure there is plenty of amazing music that awaits you on r/gamemusic.
