As the music industry continues to evolve, vast changes have taken place in the way that artists are rewarded for their work. These days, record deals are not the only factor that determine an artist's success. In fact, there has been a complete overhaul in how artists are rewarded and marketed. Huge multimillion dollar contracts are no longer the only factor that determines an artist's life trajectory.
Even with between $500 and $1000, you can get the most skilled mixing engineers on the planet. A world-renowned EDM producer, Maarten Vorwerk, charges $30,000 for his most popular tracks ?Tsunami? and ?Stampede? which reportedly became festival anthems about 5 years ago. Had Vorwerk kept these tracks to himself they would not have been able to get their track out in front of the world, and this is a major stumbling block for independent music producers. They possess the talent and skills necessary to create unique tracks but lack the financial backing required to take their projects to the next level. This is true for industries all over the world, not just in the EDM genre.
This morning, we reviewed one of the most underrated music-related communities on Reddit called r/independentmusic. Independent content creators might find some valuable points in this community.

My recent experience on r/independentmusic

One of the more active members of this subreddit is papastaranimus. He helps independent music producers to get their music on Twitch. The latest post that I interacted with on this sub was his post, which advised producers on how to get their music played on Twitch. He asked up-and-coming producers to submit their music to him, so he can get them played via his networking efforts all across the platform. This was a kind gesture from the user and it'sthe efforts like this that make a community stand out.

About r/independentmusic - Community & Members

The community has 8,800 members out of which 8-20 members are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on March 12, 2013, and over the past couple of years it has seen a decline in post engagement. This may be due to the increasing popularity of other subreddits dedicated to specific genres, or because the community is no longer as hungry for recognition.

How to access r/independentmusic?

If you are not currently a Reddit user, you can sign up for free at www.reddit.com. Once you have an account, you can follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post anything on any of the subreddits.

Moderators of r/independentmusic

However, moderators of r/independentmusic clearly weren't interested in this, as they quickly removed all such content. I found that the community on r/independentmusic was quite small. However, it was great to see that there were three moderators taking care of the page. Often, music producers who have worked on a track for weeks just want to get feedback from the audience. However, the moderators of r/independentmusic clearly weren't interested in this, as they quickly removed all content that wasn't engaged with.
To ensure a positive experience for both the users and the promoters, moderators will be in charge of monitoring each submission to ensure there is minimal spam. This will help to keep the community active and bring in new users who may be interested in joining.
At the time of writing this review, I found three mods on r/independentmusic - ?StanTheRebel?, ?IndependentMusicBot?, and ?SmallStreamersBot?. These mods work around the clock to ensure that all content on this platform meets the rules and guidelines set by the community.

Why should you follow r/independentmusic?

There is a plethora of unique content on this platform. Funny enough, I discovered an artist on this subreddit and even collaborated with him on a track. I loved the original track so much that I couldn't resist a collaboration. Similar to me, there are hundreds of producers who meet like-minded musicians, and they connect instantly. This platform is not just for creators wanting to get recognized but also for small producers to partner and create something special on their level.

Community Engagement

The community of users on r/independent is quite small, with under 10,000 members as of writing. While this number may seem sufficient at first glance, it fails to take into account the lack of engagement on the page. There are often only 2-3 upvotes to every post, and a top post on the day barely manages to reach double digits. Furthermore, though I understand that many creators just want to promote their work and not care about others, this is not how it works in a small community. It's crucial that members support each other and help each other grow in order to maintain a foothold. For example, it takes only 1,000 subscribers on YouTube for growth to commence from there. Anything until this number is reached is purely hit or miss.

YouTube and Twitch present the same major benefit - that viewers can still hear the audio well even when streaming on a low-quality connection or on a data-limited network.

Reddit Gold

I listened to about 30 tracks in a single sitting and I found 7-8 of them to be amazing. However, much to my disappointment, the most upvoted track from those 30 garnered just 8 upvotes. This was very sad to witness as an indie music producer. As a result, I don't expect much traction from this platform because it is not a give-and-take community. I will shove my content down your throat and leave the platform.

Filter by flair

On a positive note, I appreciate the filter by flair feature that Twitch streamer PapaStanimus has added to this page. That is the only Filter by Flair that you have on this page. And credit goes to him for helping out talented music producers. However, I feel that the mods could do a better job by asking the music submitters to flag their content based on their genres and BPMs. I believe if they made it more collaborative, it would grow enormously over the next few years.

Important rules you must know before joining r/independentmusic?

As an independent creator, it is not shameful to be a part of a bigger community. You want your content to be recognized and music to be heard by thousands if not millions of people. But in our desperation to get our music out there, we often end up spamming the social platforms and that is certainly not something you can do on this subreddit.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of rules on r/independentmusic, you will find hundreds of artists with no actual skills spamming the feed with their unmixed music. I'm not suggesting they shouldn't be allowed to upload, but segregationating the production skills on the basis of time, knowledge, and genre would prevent this from happening.

The most positive aspect of this subreddit's community design is that it stands out from everything I've seen so far. In addition, there is a cover which reads "Music is my religion." There are no options in the header section and just below that you have your standard Reddit sorting options. Towards the right, you have "Community Information" followed by "Mods" and "Musicians Lounge."

I request that you send me your best tracks for use as Background Entertainment on Twitch. I will gladly play them.

With the growth of platforms such as YouTube and SoundCloud, artists are more likely to be discovered and then make a living from their music. The rise of independent creators has given major recording labels a tough slap in the face, as they're no longer able to exploit talented artists for quick million dollars. Not only is there recognition involved, but the process of creating, mixing, and marketing music has changed significantly in recent years.
