Movie theaters have been an integral part of the entertainment industry for a long time. They have a massive impact on people around the world and play an important role in some people's lives as an escape route from their monotonous lives, while for others it has become a passion to watch movies and appreciate cinema. Over the years, the content has evolved to suit the needs of the viewers, and it will continue to evolve in the future. Films have the power to transport audiences into different dimensions and can have both positive and negative impacts on them.
In recent years, the rapid improvement in terms of technology has changed the way we watch movies. 3D movies are no longer the buzz; IMAX and 4DX have taken the industry by storm in the past couple of years. And, eventually, even these will be replaced by something better. All in all, movies play a vital role in our lives and there are dedicated communities where movie lovers express their opinions. It makes us feel inclusive and helps us accept different art forms and cultures. Not just that, they also teach us a lot about practical life and perception in general. That's why many people love to be a part of a larger community.
The movie community known as r/Movie_Club is accepted and rejected based upon the mass consensus. Much of it can be accredited to the bandwagon effect, which in my opinion, is unjust. But your perception can differ from mine, and that?s the beauty being a part of this broader community. Today, we are going to be reviewing one of the lesser-known movie-related communities known as r/Movie_Club.
My recent experience on r/Movie_Club
I recently browsed through the weekly posts on r/Movie_Club and came across this poll. Though it only had three votes, the original post on r/polls received 254 votes. What was interesting about it? It was a question asking users, "On average, when you go to watch a movie, how many people do you go with?"
Out of 254 votes, 103 people voted with one other person, 71 people voted with two other people, 29 voted with three other people, 28 voted by themselves, 12 voted 5+ people, and 11 voted four other people. From this data it can be inferred that on average a moviegoer prefers to watch movies with a partner rather than watch them alone or with a family. This was one of the most insightful posts made on this subreddit.
About r/Movie_Club - Community & Members
The community has 24,400 members, of which 12-30 members are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on July 20, 2015, and has been growing steadily since its creation. Notwithstanding, the engagement is quite low because not many people are active on this sub. As mentioned above, only a couple of dozen members are actively engaged in real-time.
How to access r/Movie_Club?
If you are not already a Reddit member, you can now sign up by typing âr/Movie_Clubâ in your search bar and confirming your email address. Once you have done so, you will be able to follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post content on any subreddit.
Moderators of r/Movie_Club
One of the ten mods for r/Movie_Club is ?Bondle?. He ensures that the page is up to date, and that the users are posting content adhering to community guidelines.
Why should you follow r/Movie_Club?
Members of this subreddit request titles for movies and participate in polls. They rely on the recommendations they receive from others in the group. For example, there was a post where the OP requested "Proper scary movies to watch on Halloween, as well as a few classics." He later summarized the title and set his expectations straight. As a viewer, if you have something helpful, you would obviously recommend movies and titles. This is how the communication begins.
Community Engagement
Even though the subreddit has only 20,000+ members, engagement is abysmal. Posts on the subreddit rarely receive more than fifteen to twenty upvotes, which is disappointing given that so few people are actually active in real-time. However, given that hardly anyone posts in real-time, this is to be expected.
Browsing & Navigation
Compared to a community where many members are active at once, being a part of one with a low number of active members allows for browsing content smoothly. Even if there is an abundance of videos and other rich media on the site, navigating through menus and scrolling through content is not tiring. The posts load instantly, so you save quite a few minutes due to the lack of member inactivity.
Reddit Gold
I was not expecting anything regarding Reddit Gold. With a community whose engagement is less than 0.5%, you can understand that the content on it is generally not gold worthy. Most of the informative subreddits have this problem. Herein, people do not feel like awarding gold to a fellow member because they are not getting any significant input or humor from the post. I browsed thepage for 10 minutes and did not find a single gold.
Filter by flair
Another issue with r/Movie_Club is that it does not have an essential filter for flair options. As a user scrolling through posts, you don't want a barrage of unusual posts in your feed. Filtering by flair would allow you to find posts from your desired category (for example, if you want to participate in polls or ask for recommendations). Unfortunately, r/Movie_Club only has one option, which is "Locked."

No hate speech, spam, or circlejerking is allowed on this subreddit.
Design
One of the most disappointing elements on this sub is its design. Similar to r/entertainment, r/MovieClub has a generic ?Saturn? logo with a blue cover. With over 20,000 members, at least the community icon should be changed to make sure the page stands out. But that's not the case on this sub, which is quite disappointing.

Conclusion
Movie_Club is a cool platform in its specific niche. However, it's not very engaging, and as a member, don't expect to get upvotes or even comments on your posts. It's mostly a passive community that appears past its peak.
