reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions
Thousands of movies are released each year. Some are able to achieve financial and commercial success, whereas others not so much. This is based on audience taste, which varies from person to person. For example, one person may enjoy a movie for its storytelling while another may love the action sequences. A title or franchise that appeals to many people will be more successful than one that is not as well-received.
Many of us do not enjoy Dwayne Johnson movies - they make us feel dumb - and this is normal. However, we cannot generalize it as for the masses, that form of content seems to be working, and this is the reason why the movies are so successful at the box office.
We will be reviewing a subreddit called r/MovieSuggestions. Viewers do not need to connect with everyone but just a few who are keen on helping them out. This is the place where viewers will meet like-minded individuals with regard to content.
My recent experience on r/MovieSuggestions
I recently experienced a post on this subreddit that was updated only 6 hours ago. A user posted a query asking fellow members for suggestions regarding Korean or Japanese movies in the crime, mystery, thriller, slow burn, or suspense genres. He mentioned that he had already seen movies such as Mother, Oldboy, Memoir of a Murderer, I Saw the Devil, The Wailing, The Man from Nowhere, and Parasite. This post garnered 74 upvotes and over 35 comments within a few hours.
About r/MovieSuggestions - Community & Members
The r/MovieSuggestions community is an amazing resource for movie lovers. You can share your experience, ask for suggestions, recommend movies, and interact with fellow community members. The community has 165,000 members, out of which 300-500 members are online at any given time. This subreddit has been stagnant in recent times, but I feel that it shouldn't be judged on the basis of its membership size because it caters to a different audience than r/TrueFilm and r/MovieDetails.
How to access r/MovieSuggestions?
If you are not a Reddit user, you will need to create an account and confirm your email address in order to join the MovieSuggestions subreddit. Once you have completed these steps, you will be able to follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post content on any of the subreddits.
Moderators of r/MovieSuggestions
Even after reaching 165,000 members, r/MovieSuggestions remains a large and active community. More than 10,000 members join each day, which requires five moderators to manage the content and ensure that the community stays within set guidelines.
Why should you follow r/MovieSuggestions?
The content standard on this subreddit is high. You must adhere to the rules and guidelines set forth by the moderators in order to post content. Some interesting content rules that I like on the page include ?Suggesting a Single Film,? ?Including the Films Title? in the post, ?Don?t review a film in detail,? ?Provide just one suggestion every 24 hours?, ?Don?t repeat a suggestion which has been used in the last three months,? and ?Do not include the barred entries.? By following these guidelines, this subreddit elevates its position in my view.
Community Engagement
The r/MovieSuggestions community is not as active as some other subreddits, but it does not seem to be inactive either. There are hundreds of new posts each day, and a lot of interaction takes place on each of these posts. However, the engagement rate - especially with upvotes - is abysmal. When you post content, you don't expect more than 20 people to respond to it. And that's if you're lucky. Otherwise, 5-10 comments on a single post is the norm for this subreddit's engagement rate.
Browsing & Navigation
Since fewer people are using this subreddit at the same time, browsing and navigating the experience is smooth. However, I'm disappointed with the overall design approach - the logo and the cover. Although I don't spend a lot of time on this subreddit, I don't have much to complain about because it doesn't have rich media content. A positive aspect of this subreddit is that it doesn't have lots of rich media content, and so you can browse efficiently even on a data connection.
Similar subreddits
There?s even a ?Recently Added? section so that you can keep up with the latest additions.
I like it when subreddits go out of their way to improve the overall browsing experience. On r/MovieSuggestions, in the sidebar, you'll find a "Similar Subreddits" section where you'll find a plethora of similar subreddits such as "Animesuggest", "CanadianFilm", "Documentaries", "Flicks", "Ifyoulikeblank", "IrishFilm", "kdramacommends", "KoreanFilms", "IgbTV", "movieclub", "Muricanized", "NewJerseyFilm", "NewZealandFilm", and "NotintheMovie". There's even a "Recently Added" section so that you can keep up with the latest additions.
Filter by flair
Lastly, since the content on r/MovieSuggestions is not diverse, you will find three options via Filter by Flair- ?Announcement,? ?Suggesting,? and ?Requesting.? Though these are many, they cover the essence of the page, and there is nothing more I would demand from the mods or the community. A suggestion page should strictly be about those three things, and thus I do not have anything to complain about.
Important rules you must know before joining r/MovieSuggestions?
As a movie lover, you might be eager to join the r/MovieSuggestions community. However, as we learned above, the community is strict in regard to the content you post. Therefore, make sure that whatever you're posting follows the community guidelines. For that reason, below is a list of important r/ MovieSuggestions rules that you must know:
.
Be excellent to one another.
when watching or discussing a movie
Please be mindful of spoilers when watching or discussing movies.
.
Please do not be rude, harass someone, or ignore the subreddit rules. This could lead to your account being banned.
.
There is a zero tolerance policy against piracy on this subreddit, so be sure to not share any pirated content.
Submission should be tagged properly via the filter and should be to the point.
.
Do not provide more than a list of 25 entries unless the OP has specifically asked for it.
You are not permitted to link posts to sources that are not credible, such as Letterboxd, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, or Wikipedia.
Design
In my estimation, the design of this page is the least appealing part. I do not like it when the mods and community don't put effort into making their subreddit stand out. The default Reddit logo on r/MovieSuggestions is similar to r/entertainment and other subreddits. It's disappointing to see that a subreddit with such a large audience can't take time out to add a quality group image and a cover photo.

Conclusion
Stating that movies have become more than just a form of entertainment, watching movies has the ability to connect people with different backgrounds and perspectives. Even from a neutral perspective, it is clear that movie-makers put a lot of thought and effort into each frame, telling an amazing story. Even outstanding films which receive critical recognition may still not be everyone's cup of tea. So, it can be difficult to distinguish what is likable and what isn't in films. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to decide whether or not they like a particular film. This can be seen on forums such as Reddit's r/MovieSuggestions or any other platform. Quality of films is completely dependent on how someone interprets them.
