There is no doubt that Netflix has had a profound impact on the film and television industry. It is hard to deny the fact that Netflix has forever changed the way people access movies, before even beginning to dabble in the video streaming game. Many people claim that it was Netflix, back when they simply provided a movie rental service that delivered DVDs to people's front doors, which resulted in Blockbuster going bankrupt.
Netflix created a reputation as one of the few hallowed online institutions that would create new subcultures. If you were to make a list of the sites that have had the greatest impact on modern society, what would you say? Facebook? Twitter? Google? Amazon? Yes, surely, all of those sites make the shortlist, but Netflix would also have to be included in order for that list to have credibility.
One of the first streaming platforms to break into the mainstream, Netflix even altered the common language we use when talking about television. There was no such thing, for example, as a "binge-worthy" show before Netflix. Then, of course, there is a sly way to discuss a potential hookup when you ask someone if they want to come over to "Netflix and chill?" That is how synonymous with watching TV and movies Netflix has become - it's grown to the point of being used as shorthand for watching shows.
Netflix is the leading premium streaming service because it always has a huge library of shows and movies available. For only $10 a month, Netflix subscribers can watch thousands of hours of content. There is so much content on Netflix that it can be hard to figure out what to watch.
How many times have you gone through this process: You sit down, turn on Netflix, and try to figure out what you want to watch. So, you scroll, and you scroll, and you click, and you click. You weigh out a few options, maybe watch a few trailers, and you keep on scrolling. Before you know it, an hour or more has passed. And you still have yet to settle on what you want to watch. You also have not even skimmed the surface of everything that Netflix has to offer. The hard truth is that you just spent the same amount of time it would have taken to watch a movie just trying to find the right movie to watch!
This document is a testament to the vast and varied selection of content available on Netflix, which continues to grow with new high-quality original productions. However, it can be frustrating to have no single resource that can help reduce the amount of time required to browse through its vast selection. For instance, friends may provide recommendations, but I inevitably forget them minutes after hearing them. It's a strange phenomenon, but it is nevertheless true.
So, what are we to do in these moments? Well, there is a subreddit that, it turns out, can be of some assistance. I have found that turning to r/Netflixbestof (the best of Netflix) when I cannot settle on what to watch has been helpful every single time.
What is known as the "Netflix Best of" subreddit is, essentially, a subreddit dedicated to discussing the best movies and shows currently available on Netflix. This community of fellow devotees often posts their favorite binges of the moment, and also discusses some more popular titles amongst themselves. It's a great way to find new content you may have otherwise missed, as well as to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for Netflix.
History
Netflix Best of was created shortly after the first /r/Netflixbestof subreddit went live. R/Netflixbestof was founded on April 12, 2010, and it has amassed a very large community of users in the last decade. Today, Netflix Best Of is comprised of 1.8 million members, with between a few hundred and a few thousand people actively online at any given time.
Content
According to what I mentioned earlier, the subreddit Netflix Best is the best resource for finding out about what's new and popular on Netflix. People here post about their favorite shows, movies, and discussions related to Netflix content. So if you're looking for information on what's new and hot on Netflix, this subreddit is a great place to start.
You are welcome to post on r/Netflixbestof any question, recommendation, review, request, or controversial opinion about shows and movies on Netflix. You can also participate in the exciting discussions that take place in the comments sections. You can upvote or downvote posts based on their quality, or award people with gold and other digital accolades (should you be a premium member of Reddit) to incentivize people in r/Netflixbestof to raise the bar when it comes to the quality of their posts.
Netflix Best of is a fun and civil community of Netflix lovers. One of my favorite things to do here is read people's unpopular opinion posts, such as "Ozark is so boring!" It's just fun for me to see how seriously people take these discussions; there is so much passion that people harbor for certain shows and movies. Trust me; there is seldom a dull moment on these posts.
Suggestions that I have for r/Netflixbestof
My takeaway from this subreddit's criticism is that I feel the moderators are not doing enough to engage the community. Many subreddits have moderators who host weekly polls and pinned official discussions, maybe AMAs and other fun community activities, but Netflix Best Of does not seem to have much in the way of this kind of engagement at all. This is surprising to me, too, especially since a Best Of subreddit seems to naturally lend itself to polls and fun little games like Survivor (where people vote on which parts of a series to eliminate week after week).
I think it would be a good idea for r/Netflixbestof to set up a flair system. This would make browsing the community much easier since different posts would be tagged according to their type. Furthermore, the moderators have not listed the rules of the subreddit anywhere which can make understanding what is expected of users difficult. Adding some basic guidelines, such as listing the rules, I think couldn't hurt this subreddit's cause.
Netflix's Best Of subreddit is not customized at all. The icon for the subreddit uses the default Reddit community icon, and the moderators of Netflix Best Of seem to be doing the bare minimum.
But, hey, the community self-moderates to create a very useful subreddit for finding new shows and movies, discussing Netflix content, and requesting recommendations based on descriptions of what you are looking for.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, if you are not a Reddit snob (like I apparently am), r/Netflixbestof is one of the best resources for easily and quickly finding your new favorite show or movie on Netflix. It is also a great place to partake in fascinating debates and discussions about the shows and movies you know and love. Or feel free to help a fellow member out with a recommendation. Whatever the case may be, you will be able to make the most of Netflix with r/Netflixbestof.
