The stadium underwent a renovation in the early 1990s that saw the construction of three new stands, as well as an upgrade to the facilities for both players and fans. Today it is one of the most-used stadiums in Italy with a capacity of 33,000. The Renzo Barbera Stadium opened on January 24, 1932 with a match between Palermo and Atalanta (5-1). At first, only two stands were on each side of the pitch; however, an athletics track circled the pitch. In 1990, the stadium underwent a renovation that included the construction of three new stands and an upgrade to player and fan facilities. As of today, it is one of the most-used stadiums in Italy with a capacity of 33,000 people.
