History and description

On 21 June 1936, the first stone of Estadio La Rosaleda was laid. However, due to the Spanish Civil War, it took four years for building works to actually start. The first match at La Rosaleda was played on 13 April 1941. The Málaga team won against Ferroviaria by 6 goals. This match was arranged because the old pitch of Malacitano Stadium was destroyed by a thunderstorm.

On 14 September of 2016, the stadium La Rosaleda officially opened with a game between Málaga and Sevilla. At the time, it had a capacity of about 8,000 people.

In 1965, a new east stand was built, resulting in an increased capacity of 22,000.

The stadium La Rosaleda was chosen as one of the playing venues for the 1982 World Cup, and therefore needed to be expanded. Second tiers were erected on the remaining single-tiered stands, the pitch was lowered in order to create extra rows of seating, and the rest of the stadium received extensive refurbishment.

La Rosaleda hosted three first round group matches during the World Cup. At that time, the stadium's capacity was about 37,000.

The stadium remained practically unchanged for the next 20 years, until in 2000 a major redevelopment program was started. Over a period of six years, La Rosaleda got gradually rebuilt and refurbished, resulting in more cover, increased hospitality facilities, and better comfort, but also a reduction in capacity to under 30,000.
