Founded in 1923, Elche Club de Fútbol is a Spanish football club based in the city of Elches. The name change to avoid references to World War II was mainly due to the fact that he could not use his original language (Spanish). The club played mainly in the Tercera División until 1934, when they were promoted to Segunda División B, where they stayed for two seasons before being relegated again - this time permanently - and just five years after being accepted almost everywhere in Spain, played at amateur level again!

At the start of the 1957/58 season, FC Elche made a sensational breakthrough and the club rose to the Spanish top flight for only the second time. In 1964 they finished fifth among all teams, with Racing Santander holding first place at that point. In the same year, Vavá became the first Elche player to score more than one goal in the Primera División!

The club has been swinging back and forth between the 1st and 2nd divisions for over 40 years. He never seemed to last long in any league before being promoted or relegated again. After being relegated from the first division alone in 1977, he spent five more seasons in the top flight! If they were as successful as they were in 1984 and 1988 when they came back stronger than ever then one can only imagine what would happen if that happened...
