PSV Eindhoven
Eindhoven Football Club, PSV for short, is a Dutch football club and one of the most successful in the Netherlands. Alongside arch-rivals Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam, they play at the 55,000-capacity Philips Stadion, which has hosted many big names! During World War II, Ajax was so successful that their stadium was bombed by the German Luftwaffe on May 11, 1942.
PSV have dominated the Dutch league for years. At national level they have won 23 titles and 9 cups! But PSV's greatest international success came in 1988 when they beat Girondins Bordeaux 1-0 after losing 1-0 at home to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals - largely because of the bad luck we had.
The 1978 UEFA Cup final ended in Benfica's 6-5 win against French club SC Bastia. The teams battled back and forth until a penalty shoot-out decided who would take home the trophy on their victory lap across Europe. They also won many other games at various venues, including Stuttgart's Neckarstadion, where last night another thrilling game ended 0-0 as Hans Van Breukelen saved one of six attempts from the Portuguese opponents - making him even more valuable as a goalkeeper than he .was used in a penalty shootout later that same evening at this stadium!!!
