History and description

It was inaugurated on 12 May 1929 with a match between Partizan and Red Star. It has a capacity of over 32,000 spectators. The new stadium was inaugurated in 1966 and it was known as Jugoslavija Stadium until 1991.

Stadion Crvena Zvezda opened four years later on 1 September 1963 with a match between Crvena Zvezda and Rijeka. The semi-completed stadium could then hold about 74,000 spectators, but was completed one year later with an increased capacity of 110,000 places.

The stadium's large capacity quickly made it compared to Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro's famous football stadium, and thus earned itself the nickname "Marakana."

The 1973 European Cup final between Ajax and Juventus was hosted by Stadion Crvena Zvezda.

Three years later, the stadium hosted the semi-final and final of the 1976 European Championships. Czechoslovakia won the final on penalties with Antonin Panenka gaining fame with his chip shot penalty.

This has caused an overall deterioration of the stadium's condition. Over the years, since the conversion of the standing areas to seats, the stadium's capacity has gradually been reduced, first through safety measures and later through structural damage and decay. This has caused an overall deterioration of the stadium's condition.

How to get to Stadion Rajko Mitic

It has a capacity for around 18,000 spectators. The stadium Rajko Mitic is located south of the city of Belgrade and about 3.5 kilometers from the main railway station and city center. It has a capacity for around 18,000 spectators. It is a significant but doable walk from the railway station or southern parts of the city centre, roughly 40 minutes. The walk from the Saint Sava Church, one of Belgrade’s major landmarks, which is located in Belgrade’s south, takes about 25 minutes.

The stadium can be reached with trams 9, 10, and 14 (all in the direction of Banjica). Tram 9 departs from the main railway station, tram 10 from the historic centre (e.g. Cara Dusana street), and tram 14 from Ta?majdan Park (which line 10 also passes). Get off at the Trg Oslobodenja square shortly after having passed the E-75 motorway.

Alternatively, you can take either bus 40 or 41. Bus 40 can be taken from Takovska avenue west of the city centre and bus 41 from Trg Studentski square right in the city centre.

Address: Ljutice Bogada 1a, 11000 Beograd

Eat, drink, and sleep near Stadion Rajko Mitic

The stadium of rivals Partizan, Stadion Partizana, is located in a quiet residential neighborhood that is apart from the odd local bar or eatery and there is little around in terms of eating and drinking, which is better done in central Belgrade. There are no proper hotels near the stadium. However, there are a few apartment rentals and small B&Bs like B&B Klub 101. A little up the hill towards the city centre near the Saint Sava Church, however, there are some decent hotels to choose from such as Hotel Crystal, Garni Hotel, Saint TEN Hotel, and Hotel Slavija Garni. For an overview of hotels near Stadion Rajko Mitic click here.

If you are intending to spend more time in Belgrade, it is likely best to pick something in the city centre or southern section of the city. Click here for an overview of hotels in Belgrade.

Relevant Internet links

The official website of FK Crvena Zvezda, as well as the website of the tourist organization in Belgrade, GSP.rs, offer information about public transport in Belgrade. During the first half, the choir sung one song monotonously. However, at the start of the second half, they started a massive display with flares that lasted for at least fifteen minutes.

Match visited: Red Star Belgrade vs Mladost Lucani Date visited: October 2016

We went to see Red Star play Mladost Lucani at a chilly Thursday evening in December. We walked there from central Belgrade. The walk is quite a bit long but not unpleasant as it?s rather lively parts of the city you are walking through.

We purchased our tickets at the ticket windows of the stadium prior to the start of the match between Red Star and Marseille. The crowds at Red Star's matches are small when it is a lower-profile league fixture and not helped by it being midweek and the cold temperatures. There were probably only a few thousand fans in attendance, including some who were scattered around the covered main stand where we sat, and a significant group of hardcore fans behind the goal.

Despite its monotony, the stadium's fans made the match a real treat by starting a massive display with flares in the second half.

I got my ticket on the day for 1200 RSD. A lot of fans from Partizan sat in the main stand with Crvena fans. I walked to the stadium from Saint Saviour's cathedral (about 20 minutes). Well recommended!

I went to the derby between Partizan and Crvena last night and it was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was terrific, with both sets of fans coming alive every time the ball was played. There was singing and plenty of flares. I got my ticket on the day for 1200 RSD, which is a good price considering how much fun everyone seemed to be having. It's definitely worth recommending - I saw a lot of people from Partizan sitting in the main stand with Crvena fans. From Saint Saviour's Cathedral (about 20 minutes walk) it's an easy walk to the stadium.

Carl wrote on 31 May 2013 at 1:51pm that he went out there from Southampton a month ago to watch the Belgrade derby. He says that the fans are nuts and there are no families present at the game. He reports that the atmosphere is very hot and that it is much more dangerous than any game he has been to in Italy.

. I went out there from Southampton a month ago to watch the Belgrade Derby with a few friends. Wow, you must be brave to go to that place. The fans are crazy and there are no families around. It was an amazing experience; the atmosphere was hot and it was more dangerous than any game I have been to in Italy.
