History and description

The official opening of Stamford Bridge was on the 28th of April 1877, but for the next 28 years it mainly served as an athletics venue. Stamford Bridge was rebuilt in 1905, and it was subsequently offered to Fulham FC. Fulham turned down the offer, and newly formed Chelsea FC moved in instead.

The Stamford Bridge of that time consisted of a covered seating stand and a vast open bowl of terraces covering the other three sides. An estimated 100,000 people could fit into the stadium.

No changes were made until 1930, when new terraces were built at the Shed End, and in 1939, when a small seating stand was built at the North End.

The highest attendance at Stamford Bridge was in 1935 during a match against Arsenal. A total of 82,905 fans attended the match.

In 1965, a new covered seating stand was erected in the West Stand. Redevelopments continued in the mid 1970s when the old main stand was demolished and replaced by the new East Stand.

The construction of the new East Stand at Stamford Bridge had a significant effect on Chelsea's finances, and the club was almost forced into bankruptcy as a result. The Stamford Bridge site was sold to property developers in order to cover some debts, which almost resulted in Chelsea being evicted and forced to ground share with Fulham or QPR.

In 1992, the club regained ownership from the fans. However, no changes were made to the stadium between then and 1999 when the Taylor report was published. The stadium was in dire need of redevelopment at this point, so the club invested in a new stadium.

Work on new seating stands began in 1994 with the demolition of the North terraces. A new stand was erected in their place a few years later. The Shed End terraces also lost their seating in a similar manner shortly after.

The reconstruction of the West Stand began in 1997 and was completed in 2001. At the same time, the East Stand underwent an extensive refurbishment.

Despite this, Stamford Bridge is still a ground that has limitations in terms of capacity and facilities, and Chelsea have sought to either expand Stamford Bridge or build a new stadium over the last decade.

The expansion of the current ground turned out to be too complicated, and the club initially explored different sites in West London for the construction of a new stadium. However, their bid for the site failed in 2012.

Following their failed Battersea bid, Chelsea directed their attention back to the Stamford Bridge site, and announced plans for the construction of a new stadium in 2015. In 2016, the first images were presented of a 60,000 all-seater designed by Herzog & De Meuron architects.

The city council and the major of London approved the project in early 2017. The club is currently hoping to move into their new home before the start of the 2021-22 season, during which they would have to play their home matches elsewhere. Both Wembley Stadium and Twickenham HAVE been named as possible options.

How to get to Stamford Bridge

The Stamford Bridge Stadium is located in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It is less than 2 miles south-west of Hyde Park, and less than 3 miles south-west of Buckingham Palace. The nearest tube station is Fulham Broadway, which is on the District Line. One can get to Fulham Broadway by taking a train bound for Wimbledon from Earl's Court station, which is on the Circle and Piccadilly Lines.

Chelsea Football Club is one of the most popular teams in England and their games are always sold out.

Various buses travel down Fulham Road, which include line 14 (from Euston Square to Putney), line 211 (from Waterloo Station to Hammersmith), and line 414 (from Maida Vale to Putney Bridge).

Other buses that travel in the vicinity of the stadium are bus 11 from Liverpool Street Station, bus 28 from Kensal Rise, bus 296 from Ladbroke Grove and Clapham Junction, and bus 391 from Richmond.

Chelsea does not recommend arriving by car on match days as there is no parking available. On non-match days, limited paid parking is available underneath the stadium.

If arriving by car from the M25, take the M4 into the city. At Earl's Court turn right onto Earl's Court Road, and after about a mile right onto Fulham Road. After a few hundred meters, the stadium will be on your right.

Address: Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London, SW6 1HS

Eat, drink, and sleep near Stamford Bridge

The bus stop is on the north side of the stadium by Gate F. Stamford Bridge is located on the edge of two wealthy neighborhoods, Chelsea and Fulham. While it isn't as lively as the Chelsea area to its north-east, there are a few coffee shops, restaurants, and pubs near the stadium along Fulham Road and King's Road a little further south. The bus stop is located on the north side of Stamford Bridge by Gate F. Right next to the stadium is the Chelsea Village complex which houses a few restaurants, a sports bar, and the Millennium Hotel. As you may expect, it is of the more luxurious type.

Several more hotels are close to Stamford Bridge, many of which are located a little further away near Earl's Court station. The Ibis Earls Court and a Holiday Inn Express are located north of the stadium, whereas the Wyndham Grand London is situated on the banks of the river Thames.

Do hotels near Earl's Court station provide decent accommodations? There are a few hotels near Earl's Court station that offer reasonable accommodations. One option is the London Town Hotel, which is only a short walk from the stadium. Other options include the Rushmore Hotel, Henley House Hotel, and Lord Kensington Hotel. Click here for all of the hotels in Central London. If you're looking for additional accommodation in London, be sure to check out the website listed here.

Chelsea Tickets

Tickets for Chelsea FC games can be purchased online, by phone, or at the box office at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea members are given priority to purchase match tickets. All regular league matches have already sold out, meaning it is advised to buy as much advance tickets as possible so make sure to check the Chelsea website for on-sale dates. You will likely not be able to purchase tickets without a membership.

Chelsea matches fall into three price categories: B games, the cheapest, range in price from £47.00 for a lower-tier seat at one of the ends to £65.00 for a seat at the upper West Stand. Tickets for category AA+ matches cost between £56.00 and £82.00; some restricted view tickets can be a little cheaper.

You can find a seating plan here. To get more information, call 0 871 984 1905 (UK) or +44 207 835 6000 (international).

Stamford Bridge tours

Chelsea FC offers guided behind-the-scenes stadium tours, which include access to the home dressing room, the players' tunnel, press room, and the Chelsea museum. The tours last about 60 minutes. Tours run every half hour from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The museum is open from 9:30am to 5:00pm (last entry at 4:00pm). On matchdays, the museum is open from 11:30am to 6:00pm, but not on European matchdays (or the day before).

The online booking system allows visitors to make reservations. Walk-ups are allowed, but availability is subject to change.

The ticket costs £19.00 and the access to the museum is only £11.00 if you purchase it online beforehand. The discount of £3.00 is offered if you make the purchase in advance.

I go to a few matches during the season! The Bridge does lack atmosphere but I must admit that the best stands for the singing is The Shed and the Matthew Harding! The East and West stands are usually full of tourists and families. The stadium tour is great as well as you get to go in the press room, the home and away changing rooms, the tunnel, the dugouts and you even get to sit in The Shed upper tier section during the tour! I highly recommend any football fan to visit Stamford Bridge!.
