Cartoons are for kids! Usually, this is true. But there is some truth to the statement that animated series are traditionally meant for children. Today, adult cartoons - spearheaded by shows like The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy - are challenging this archetype. Sometimes it can be fun to revisit the cartoons of our childhood today. Nowadays, animated films and TV shows tend to be decidedly more realistic in their animation, which I find generally less fun. Granted, there are a few exceptions- like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park- but for the most part, I no longer find cartoons as amusing as I used to.

I would be lying if I said that I never get nostalgic when watching old cartoons. The minute I put on an episode of Scooby-Doo or Looney Tunes, I am immediately transported to my childhood home. I am a kid again, sitting on the rug, inches away from the TV, with a bowl of cereal, laughing hysterically as Road Runner takes Wile E. Coyote off yet another cliff, or under yet another anvil. Ah, it really doesn't get much better than that.

I frequently come across free streaming sites geared towards children, but occasionally I find a site that features a lot of content from my childhood. Sites like Super Cartoons, however, are also good for sharing my favorite childhood shows with my own kids.

When my son's face lights up at the sight of Bugs Bunny or Tasmanian Devil, I cannot even tell you how much joy it brings me. The fact that sites like this exist is a blessing. I love being able to revisit my own childhood while also sharing the gift of quality animation with my own children.

The current state of cartoons, of course, is a far cry from the classics. While I, for one, miss the days when cartoons were still cartoons and not CGI computer graphics or live-action remakes that blur the lines between animation and reality, Super Cartoons provides an excellent source of absurd, ridiculous, and imaginative cartoons that are just what we need to rediscover our inner child.

History

With free streaming sites like this, it can be difficult to find any actual history. Many of the creators of these sites remain largely anonymous, much of the ways in which the sites came to be are kept pretty under wraps. The one thing that I can say with certainty about Super Cartoons is that it has been in operation since 2012. The long-running archive of Super Cartoons is an impressive accomplishment, and here's to it continuing past ten years (and beyond!).

Design

Super Cartoons has a simple website design with blue backgrounds and clouds on the top of the page. The site feels appropriate for the content, featuring fun animated clouds. Beyond that, the site is well organized. A menu bar at the top of the page allows you to browse Super Cartoons? videos by a few different options. Simply choose between Home, Cartoons, Characters, Studios, or Series. This lets you browse the site as broadly or as specifically as you wish. The one main feature that it is blatantly missing, however, is a search bar. In case you want to type in a specific keyword and not have to click through page by page to find what it is that you are looking for, a search box is available below the menu bar.

When you click into a video on the Super Cartoons website, an embedded JW Media Player will start to play. It is a basic setup with additional videos featured as above the player. To get immersed in the content or minimize it for more information and view additional videos, simply click into full screen mode. Each video comes with a brief description underneath, including a synopsis, studio credits and user ratings (given by fellow Super Cartoons users).

Although the site's design could be more experiential, such as Netflix's or YouTube's, I think Super Cartoons does a satisfactory job overall without ads or fees.

Content

I have already touched upon what Super Cartoons has to offer, so I will only reiterate it in case I missed something. On this website, you will find only the best of the best classic animations. Enjoy the timeless cartoons from our childhood, free of charge, like Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Scooby-Doo, Donald Duck, Tasmanian Devil. The home page of Super Cartoons boasts that it hosts over 1,000 cartoon shorts. Many of which are from decades ago and do not include any full-length episodes or movies. I would like to see Super Cartoons add more shows from more networks and a broader range of time periods.

If Super Cartoons were to add newer shows and feature-length presentations, this would increase their superness. This would be a copyright nightmare and could potentially damage the entire site, so I understand why it is not being done.

Desktop and Mobile Experience

Unfortunately, at present there is no Super Cartoons app. This would be a great enhancement for mobile users (obviously), as the site is well optimized for mobile browsers. In fact, as far as free streaming sites go, Super Cartoons has one of the best mobile experiences I have ever seen. Simply scroll down the list of titles and click into whatever you want to see without being inundated with too many ads or a clunky design. The site works well whether you are on your desktop computer, iPhone, Android phone or tablet.

Pricing and Plans

While there are some downsides to Super Cartoons, arguably the best aspect of it is that it is 100% free, with no ads whatsoever. Most similar websites suffer from intrusive pop-ups and ads that play before videos begin, but Super Cartoons manage to avoid this without any difficulty using ad blockers.

Suggestions that I have for Super Cartoons

I would love to see Super Cartoons develop an app. The site is designed well for the app space, with archived content that features great cartoon content. However, it is unlikely that this will happen, given the nature of the site. That being said, I think that Super Cartoons, as I mentioned earlier, could definitely benefit from expanding their roster of shows. As of now, the site remains somewhat niche, and I would love to see their offerings expanded. Perhaps a premium upgrade could make this possible.
