TV.com is a website that allows users to talk about their favorite shows. Users can watch videos, add information such as news, synopsis, trivia, quizzes and earn rewards. Apart from user-generated content, TV.com also has its own editorial content which covers specific television events such as award shows, Comic-con, holiday TV and upfronts. This way there is a proper balance of authority between the users and the editors.

A rise in streaming services has created a segment of fandom where an entire community just wants to engage in dialogue regarding a piece of content. There are forums and websites dedicated to specific shows and movies, where people converse with each other and become a part of a broader community. TV.com is a platform where you will find an entire community that discusses not just one but a number of titles from various networks. Since TV.com is owned by CBS, you are able to access full episodes of partnered networks such as HBO, Eye Network, NBC and CW in high definition quality. Apart from that, you are able to access additional content such as behind-the-scenes news, message boards, featured videos and recaps. I tested the video playback on the website and I have to say that I am quite impressed with the stream speed.

TV.com is the ultimate website for television fans. It offers a wide range of information about episodes, news, and community discussions. TV.com is not a streaming platform, it is more like an aggregator that has clips, news, and highlights of different content materials offered on CBS and partnered networks. For streaming, you will be redirected to streaming services such as Hulu, Vudu, Comcast, Amazon Prime, iTunes to name a few.

TV.com offers detailed information on TV shows, their casts and crew, discussion forums, episode guides, and clip length videos.

Participation points

You can enjoy watching a stream while exploring the episode guides which feature textual information generated by users. These guides have recaps, synopses, credits, trivia, quotes, notes and supporting images. For those who participate in earning points and eventually becoming editors for the guide for which they are Moderators, the platform enables user-focused communication with constructive participation.

CNET acquired domains such as news.com and radio.com in order to host company?s technology-related TV shows. One of these shows was called TV.com - herein, they provided the best of the internet for new and casual computer users. In the mid-2000s, CNET acquired TV Tome - a television database run by a fan and launched its own website in 2005. Though they acquired and started their own website, they didn?t change much from the original TV Tome site. In 2008, CBS purchased CNET Networks and renamed the company to CBS Interactive. TV.com over the years continued to innovate the television viewing experience thanks to features such as watchlist - which was new at that time. Other elements that made the service stand out were personalized listing based on user feedback, social media integration, and comprehensive content coverage.

I appreciate TV.com because it does not have a predominant editorial force, which allows for open dialogue and user feedback. There are dedicated forums where users can share their thoughts and feelings on content, and CBS uses this feedback to improve its services.

Design

I feel ambivalent about the website's design approach. I like some aspects, but I dislike others too. For example, the color tone is inconsistent throughout the website. The center-aligned section looks dated and the text and news section haven't been updated in a year.

Header

Let's begin with something good--the search bar is located to the left. You can use it to access information about your favorite shows directly. Besides that, there are six other options in the header section: Shows, News, Community, People followed by Login and Join.

Hero Section

The banner ads take up most of the right side. The disappointing section is here. I do not like websites that have banner ads right above the hero section. It looks clickbait-ish and does not help the user journey in any shape or form. There are two major sections - left is for content and the right is for ads. The content section has a small replay window on the left and some recap thumbnails. The banner ads take up most of the right side.

Body

The body of the website is dominated by outdated news. This renders the website's claim that its content is up to date useless. If you scroll further, you will find sections such as "What to Watch Online?", "Featured Community Posts?", "Trending Shows?", and "Most Popular Shows". While few of these sections are really helpful, there are dozens of ads across these sections. The right column is filled with native ads from Taboola, and there are sponsored content at the bottom along with 3-4 GDN banners.

Footer

The footer of TV.com is cluttered and looks as if it was not well designed. There are social media icons at the top followed by numerous options such as Shows, Movies, Web, People, News, Mobile, Community, Closed Captioning, Rating Guidelines, About Us, Jobs, and so on.

Inner Pages

The website's inner pages appear cool and well-placed. There is a A-Z filter category with TV Shows, Movies and Web Series at the top. There is a list of the trending TV shows and the option to follow those shows. You will find the name of the program, the broadcaster, and synopsis followed by EP Guide, Videos and Community.

Content

TV.com offers a vast selection of content, covering a variety of shows that are trending around the world. This includes popular shows like Modern Family, According to Jim, Frontline, Survivor, Fixer Upper, American Ninja Warrior, Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld, Law & Order: Special Victims and many others.

Classification on the basis of genre

On the left side of this screen are 25 genres. When you click any of the genres, you will be able to find shows that fall into that category. Some popular genres are Action & Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Business, Arts, Drama, Music, News, Reality, Science, Sports, Talk Shows & Gaming.

Desktop/Mobile experience

After browsing TV.com on my laptop and later my Google Pixel 3a, I found that the website was responsive and apart from intrusive ads, I encountered no difficulties while navigating across it. In fact, I even found an advertisement from AliExpress between the rating and rankings section. On the website, there are a couple of things that I liked. First, it allows you to find information and watch the show. Second, you can choose the background color of the website - Blue, Grey or Black.

Registering on TV.com is free, but streaming is not free. You will be redirected to the partnered networks for streaming.

Suggestions I have for TV.com

I am not certain what has gone wrong with TV.com, but they need to improve their website design, news section activity, and overall presentation. Currently, the TV.com project looks more like an inactive niche site that has not been checked in on for a year or more.

Conclusion

TV.com has the potential to be a great platform. With the financial backing it has, I don't know why the developers aren't working towards developing an independent social media platform just based around TV. You can try visiting TV.com to learn about TV shows and updates. But why would you? When it's readily available as a search query in the search engine results? This goes to show that TV.com as a platform has been underutilized.
