History and description

The stadium underwent a $44 million renovation in 2011 which made it one of the best stadiums in Europe. The Orange Velodrome, better known as the Stade Velodrome, served as a playing venue for the 1938 World Cup. Soon after, it became the new home of Olympique de Marseille after Stade de l?Huveaune had become too small for the club. The stadium underwent a $44 million renovation in 2011 which made it one of the best stadiums in Europe. The Stade Velodrome officially opened on June 13, 1937 with a friendly match between Marseille and Italian side Torino. During the 1938 World Cup, it hosted one first round match and the semi-final between Italy and Brazil (2-1).

The stadium initially had a cycling track and a running track that circled the pitch. It was bowl-shaped and both long sides had cover. The stadium remained largely unchanged for the following decades, though the tracks got gradually eaten away by the extension of the stands.

The Stade Velodrome received a first refurbishment in preparation for the Euro 1984 Championships. It hosted one first round group match and the semi-final match between France and Portugal (3-2).

The stadium was almost completely rebuilt for the 1998 World Cup, and as a result, it gained a characteristic round-shaped stand. Capacity was increased to about 60,000 seats; however, this new stadium also received criticism for its lack of cover.

Four first round group matches were hosted at Stade Velodrome during the World Cup. The round of 16 match, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between Brazil and Holland were all played at the stadium.

Following France's Euro 2016 victory, new redevelopment plans were presented. Works included the almost complete reconstruction of the two principal stands, minor works on the stands at both ends and the construction of a roof that would cover the complete stadium, hereby increasing capacity with another 7,000 seats. The redevelopment was completed in the summer of 2014.

At the 2016 Euros, Stade Velodrome hosted four first-round group matches and the quarterfinal between Portugal and Poland (1-1). Finally, France and Germany played to a 2-0 victory in the semifinals.

In 2016, Orange Velodrome was renamed in honor of its new naming rights sponsor, telecommunications firm Orange.

How to get to Orange Velodrome

The Orange Velodrome is located in Marseille, about 3.5 kilometers from Marseille's city center and a kilometre more from central railway station Saint-Charles. You can reach the stadium with metro line 2. Catch the metro southbound at Saint-Charles railway station or another stop in the city centre (e.g. Noailles), and get off at either Rond-Point du Prado or Sainte Marguerite Dromel (both located at different sides of Stade Velodrome).

If you're coming from the old port area, you can catch line 1 of the metro and change at station Castellane to line 2. You can find a metro network map here.

If it is also possible to simply walk from the old port area to Stade Velodrome, which will take 30-45 minutes. Find your way to the Rue de Rome, a few blocks inland, and turn south. The Rue de Rome turns into the wide Avenue de Prado, which will bring you in one line to the stadium. It is a pleasant walk.

Marseille has good train connections with the rest of France. There are frequent direct TGV trains from, for example, Paris, Lyon, and Nice. You can book your train tickets in advance through the official SNCF website.

Marseille has its own airport, Marseille Provence Airport. This airport is good forconnections and is also serviced by low-cost airlines. The airport is located 25 kilometers north-west of Marseille?s center, on the other side than Stade Velodrome. To get to the stadium from the airport, catch a bus to Saint-Charles train station and make your way there.

Address: 3 Boulevard Michelet, 13008 Marseille

Eat, drink, and sleep near Stade Velodrome

The Orange Velodrome is located in a wealthy residential area. There are several eating and drinking options around, most notably on Avenue du Prado in the direction of the city center. In the city center, the old port area (Vieux Port) is the place to eat and drink. Le Huitième Hotel is a budget alternative to the Novotel on Avenue du Prado. The Novotel is closer to the centre, but Le Huitième is an easy walk.

If you are looking for a place closer to the coast where you can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities, the Residence Adagio Prado Plage may be a good option for you. Most people will choose to stay in the old port area or south near Castellane, both of which are within walking distance of both the stadium and city center.

Which hotels are near the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, and how can I explore more options in the city centre if I want to stay there?

Many many thousands of people were streaming past after an hour had passed.

I attended the stade velodrome for Hungary v Iceland in Euro 2016 and I was not disappointed. The stadium was fantastic, the seats were cheap, and the atmosphere was great. I stopped in a nearby hotel after the game and an hour later there were still many thousands of Hungarians streaming past.

I have always regarded Marsyllie fans as top supporters. However, they did not step up to the plate when it mattered most; there were no away fans! Overall, Marseille is a great place to visit. The stadium is awesome and I would go there again.

I have always regarded fans from Marsyllie as top supporters, but they did not step up to the plate. There were no away fans! Overall, Marseille is a great place to visit. The stadium is awesome and I would go there again.

The design of the seating seems to encourage people to walk over the seats to get into and out of their places, which makes it difficult to see where the seats are. I also thought that having the journalists located so high up on the pitch was not a good idea since they will need binoculars to see the players' numbers. I enjoyed my visit for the recent Europa League match between Groningen and visiting Holland Park.

The design of the seating arrangement discourages people from getting up and moving around, as well as making it difficult for journalists to see the players and numbers on the pitch. I thought the location of the journalists was too high and far from the pitch. They would probably need binoculars to see anything. I enjoyed my visit to the recent Groningen Europa match, despite it being small in number.
