The fact that we have so many great shows and movies to watch during the golden age of film and television is a very valuable thing. It is never been so easy to watch great movies and TV shows no matter where we are or what we are doing.
I would argue that the quality of shows and movies available to us is also higher than it has ever been before. The rise of streaming apps has forced film and television studios to produce better content, resulting in more amazing movies and shows to choose from.
With the new production studios now on the scene, and with the bar being raised higher than ever before, every film and TV studio has been forced to keep up. In my opinion, a lot of this recent increase in quality is due to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video putting out award-winning and critically acclaimed content that is exclusively available on their streaming platforms. And with the success of these aforementioned streaming services, now everyone wants a piece of the pie.
There are now a plethora of new streaming apps and services to choose from, which can be both exciting and confusing for consumers. This is inevitably a good thing, as it means there is more choice and variety available, but it makes it difficult to decide on which premium options to invest in.
Looking for a streaming app with a variety of content is the number one concern for me. I also think that quality is very important, especially if you are looking for shows and movies to watch. Above all else, the app must offer what I am looking for. However, before making a decision based on these factors, it is important to look at the app's content.
The most important aspect of a streaming app, in my opinion, is how well it is designed and what kinds of features it offers. If a given streaming app has titles that you know you will love, but it doesn't deliver user-friendly, intuitive, dependable ways of using it, then there is not much of a point. What good is an app if it crashes often or if you can't seem to figure out how to use it? You want your streaming app to provide excellent user experience, great design, and tons of useful features that make your movie and TV binging as enjoyable as possible.
After considering the content, quality, and features of each streaming app, you should also take into account price. Most streaming apps are priced between $5 and $10 a month, but there are a few that go up to $20 per month. In my opinion, a streaming app must provide a great deal of content, quality, and features in order to be worth the cost.
What is truly amazing about Vudu, though, is that it does not cost anything to sign up for the service. Simply download the app and create an account, and you are good to go. There are no hidden fees or payments required - everything is free of charge! The only cost you will encounter is commercials, which we will elucidate momentarily. But overall, this app is a fantastic value and should definitely be on your radar if you're looking for a streaming service that offers top notch content without any hefty costs.
History
Vudu was founded on January 1, 2004. The company began as a set-top box maker and transitioned to streaming services in 2010, when it was acquired by Walmart.
Design
I find the design of Vudu to be quite appealing. It has a well-executed and refreshing theme that stands out from other premium streaming apps. Although it has the standard black background, the bright splashes of sky blue provide a nice distinction from the others. Vudu looks great, and its functionality is even better.
The app is very organized and easy to use.
I appreciate the layout of Vudu. It is simple, intuitive, and practical. There are a few main categories at the top of the app to choose from: Home, Rentals, Deals, TV, Kids, and then a few select genres. Just click on the tab of what you are looking for and browse through thumbnails that appear. The app is well organized and easy to use.
Below the app's main menu, you will find a parallel user menu. This menu features Spotlight (featured films and shows, Search, My Vudu, Free, and Settings), which is one of the most user-friendly and intuitive premium streaming apps on the market today.
Content
Vudu boasts a vast selection of movies and television shows to choose from. One of the best features of this app is undoubtedly its lack of bias towards any one network or production studio. In addition to new titles from Paramount, 21st Century Fox, and all of the traditional film studios, Vudu also offers films produced by Netflix and Disney (Disney Plus is not the only way to enjoy Disney content these days!).
Although there are movies and shows available for you to stream with your Vudu membership, the majority of the content that Vudu has to offer is titles that can be rented or purchased digital copies of directly from the app. This version of video content delivery is definitely not the most common in this day and age; it is something like a completely digital version of Blockbuster with some elements of Netflix thrown in.
With Vudu, you can download your movies and shows so that you can watch them offline or link other streaming accounts for one convenient location.
Pricing and Plans
So, I know that it was not entirely truthful to say a little while ago that Vudu is a completely free streaming app. In fact, it is only free to download and use and there is not a lot of available content for free. However, what Vudu does make money from is the fact that, for the most part, their movies are only available as either rented or bought titles. This way they have a much larger selection than many of the other streaming apps out there. Prices for movies vary depending on how new and popular they are.
Suggestions that I have for Vudu
Despite my personal dislike of the digital rental system, I think Vudu's latest app is wildly successful. I believe that the app would be even more popular if it offered an alternate way of using it- for instance, by allowing us to pay per month and access a broader range of titles without the need for a rental or purchase.
