Description

The stadium was built in 1933 and had a capacity of 80,000 people. White City Stadium was built for the 1908 Olympic Games. It formed a part of the Franco-British exhibition site, an 140-acre complex of palaces and exhibition buildings. Most of these buildings had whitewashed exteriors, hence the name White City.

The stadium was built after the city of Rome failed to meet its financial obligations and the 2008 Olympics were moved to London. The stadium could hold a total of 93,000 visitors.

The city hosted the Olympics among others, including the athletics, football, and cycling events. Additionally, it was the finish of the first modern marathon.

The stadium received little use after the Olympics, but was taken over by the Greyhound Racing Association in 1927. From then on, it primarily hosted greyhound racing and speedway. In addition, other sports such as rugby, boxing, and athletics also took place at the stadium.

The game between Uruguay and France was played at White City Stadium in 1966 as part of the World Cup. The stadium had originally been scheduled to host a dog race, but when the owner of Wembley Stadium refused to reschedule, the match was moved there.

The stadium served as Queens Park Rangers' home for short spells in the 1930s and 1960s, but the club was unhappy with the conditions at their nearby Loftus Road stadium. However, both times the club quickly moved back.

In the 1980s, the stadium became almost solely used for dog races. It was demolished in 1984 to make way for additional buildings adjacent to BBC White City complex. The last event at the stadium was a greyhound race on the 22nd of September 1984.

My dad as a child used to watch the dog racing there after playing on all the bombsites, then the Speedway in his 20s.

As a child, my dad enjoyed watching the dog races at the local track. Later in his twenties, he discovered the Speedway.

The first time I felt sadness at a nonphysical loss was the demolition of that iconic stadium, for a building that was to be for the BBC radio stations and suchlike in the end just offices very sad!

I cannot find any information elsewhere and the English FA have not even bothered to respond to my inquiries. I would be grateful for any information or suggestions.

Did the Q.P.R. play Northampton Town in a First Division game on September 2, 1963 at White City?

Hello! I attached a silver pocket chain to a watch with a medal that commemorates the first floodlight match at White City, on December 14, 1932. Has anyone any further information about that bit of history? Thank you for your kind attention.

There will never again be the thrilling excitement you felt during a greyhound race's final night. Bands playing on the center field, the starter for the greatest sporting event of any year bar none! And I?ve been to the Olympics, numerous Wembley cup finals, F1 races around the world, nothing comes close to one of those magic nights. When the man in the white uniform rang that bell from the inner field you didok with anticipation, you were never disappointed no matter what the result, just a feeling that you?d just witnessed and been part of the greatest event in sport!.

It is sad that the site did not survive until the present wealthy owners of QPR arrived on the scene, as it would have been ideal for the shiny new home ground they are hoping for. Did the BBC really need all that new office space when they have more or less abandoned the iconic TV Centre next door?

I believe you are being a little too harsh on Rome regarding the 1908 Olympics, wasn't there an unexpected natural disaster in Italy which required the diversion of funds earmarked for the Games?

As I grew up and went to work, I would go to the dog track on a Thursday night and if I won, I would go back again on a Saturday. Those were lovely days and I look back and think how lucky I am to have had such a happy childhood. M. Rippon
